General Discussion / Re: RIP 2018 Edition
« on: August 09, 2018, 11:57:21 AM »
Thank you, both.

I haven't cried this much when my beloved Grandmother passed away.  Or from other pets.

The difference is, they were all breaking down or suffering.  One dog had a heart condition, another one lost so much weight from cancer he was reduced from 75 lbs to 25 lbs, and started crying out at night.  Putting them down was horrible, but also a mercy.

But yellow lab Brandy?  She had a good appetite.  She was very aware, very vital.  She didn't seem to be in any pain.  But her rear legs began to get real weak, and finally a front leg started limping.  And the limp got worse, and worse, until she fell over trying to pee, and was afraid to even try and walk.  It happened over the course of a few days, when she was easily bouncing up from her bed this past weekend.

There was some other things, like lumps on her stomach, which may have been cancer (Or not.  She had a big benign tumor for the past several years), and she had an infection causing her to pee blood for a time, which cleared up.  But an examination found several masses over some organs and up her tract, which is always a bad sign.

But in the end, it was all for a bad leg.  Seeing that tail wag, those bright eyes looking for treats, her tongue licking your nose, don't think I can accept this was right, even though I know it had to be..

And it's done.  I held her until the end.

And now I'm at a brewery, to drink.  Alone.

After Blunt Talk, his options must have really dried up.  You get the impression sci fi was never really his first choice.

But maybe he's gotten sentimental in his old age?  Can't imagine he needs the money or anything..

My 14/15 year old yellow lab Brandy has the typical bad hips of her breed.  And now she hurt her leg. Right, it looks like.  She's afraid to even walk, and topples over if she tries to pee.

I want so badly to just let her poop and pee onto these towels set up, on a comfy doggy bed, and just spoon feed her all she wants, and wait until she passes of old age.  But it's time.  Tomorrow.

Pretty much their entre inventory is available to test drive until Monday.

Also, No Man's Sky is half price.  I want it, but I'm running an HD 620 intel onboard, so odds are it may not even run.  Steams return policy better be hassle free..

Has anyone seen our resident doctor around?

I'd ask mine, but I can't get a straight answer..  Honestly, I don't think he really knows.  Or he just doesn't feel like explaining.

Proton Pump Inhibitors/acid reducers:  Could those have an effect on how much you can eat in a sitting?

It stands to reason insufficiant acid may result in struggling with, say, half a meatloaf sandwhich when you used to be able to handle two.  I'm ravenous for them, but I just tap out after a certain point and can't "force it".  (No such problem with nuts, chips, ice cream, beer..  So far, it's mainly deli meats, meat loaf, meatballs..  Basically, meat.)

Getting a scope put down my throat in a few weeks, because of related swallowing issues, but just wondering if anyone has knowledge/experience with this kind of thing (Say, if you have acid reflux yourself, and need acid reducers like I do..)

Being a hypochondriac who also has a lot of medical problems, who keeps hearing stories about that guy/woman/relative who got cancer, suddenly develops a condition that could be cancer, looks up the symptoms online, and they all point to cancer.

So yeah, a bit worried.

This past month, I started off getting random things caught in the throat/esophagus, got put on a ppi for acid reflux (Which I have), and for the past two weeks I'm struggling with any meats/eggs.  Three bites of a ham sandwich and I'm done.

So of course, I'm assuming the worst.  The gastrointestinalologist will have a look this Friday.

On the positive side, I have no trouble at all with water, soup, crackers and peanut butter, protein bars..  Just stuff like ham or eggs, chicken, steak.  And everything seems to be passing through ok..

I promised I'd ease up on the griping.  :(

I think we've found someone thicker then Anakin Skywalker.

"Sqwaak!  Pieces of eight!  Pieces of eight!"

*Pirate Black Dog casually walks by*

*Bar filled with obvious pirates*

"Jim Hawkings, no pirate will ye find here.  Isn't that right, laddies?!"

I'm sorry, Bobby, I have to:

Why can't people be discrete, or at least not be so melodramatic about any little thing?  Say, for example, you're an atheist dentist who takes over a practice, and you find out the old guard used to let nuns and priests get serviced for free.

Ok, so it's your house, and your rules.  But do you HAVE to make a stink about it?  When your secretary gently tells you this, since your current patient is a nun, do you need to throw a fit?

Do what you need to do, but come on..  What ever happened to "class"?

Better then Rampage?

Because some reviews are comparing it to Rampage.

Tech-apalooza / Pinch/zoom and Assistivetouch ipad
« on: June 25, 2018, 11:03:08 AM »
Just a question about something I noticed:

Ipad has two ways to zoom in on an object.

1.  Pinch/zoom, where you use two fingers to draw in/out, enlarging or shrinking view.

2.  A feature where a three finger triple tap uses a "magnifier" like feature to zoom on a part of the screen, or alternatively, magnifies the entire screen.

Ok, the question is, I've notice using the triple tap, blurry text/images won't clear up, like they do with pinch/spread.  If they're blurry while small, they remain blurry while enlarged.

Why?  Is there an upscaling feature applied on pinching, that the magnifier doesn't support?

Geekville / Comic Books are for kids
« on: June 09, 2018, 11:07:51 AM »
I keep hearing how they used to be for children, until they all grew up.

Wasn't mad magazine started in the 1950's?  That sure isn't for kids.

Cracked, that's another one.

Mainstream wise, Superman had anti war social commentary in the 1940's.  No kids going to really see that.

Sure, there are comics marketed to a younger audience, but as a whole, isn't the "they're for kids" line a myth?

Edit:

Relevent:

http://www.theouthousers.com/index.php/news/123645-paul-pope-clarifies-dc-we-make-comics-for-45-year-olds-comment.html

I'm not sure this is a recent thing, nor should it be a surprise.  Even discounting "mature" lines like Vertigo and such, a lot of comics have content that requires some degree of social awareness.

I'll be honest Bobby, when I saw you say "preaching", I thought you were talking about me.

Because I read over some of my older posts in "annoys", and wonder when I became the thing that annoys me.  :(

But yes, I agree about Supergirl.   :biggrin_mini2:

What would Ollie have done. I wonder?  He goes back and forth on killing.

The first "non retro" mainstream Megaman game since 8.

The hook looks to be a "dual gear" gimmick, where each has unique abilities and a cool down between them.

the episode where barry got ralph killed is imo one of the better episodes because I am tired of the comments in shows where you can not kill a villain then you sink down to their level as if it is better for the villain to rot away in some prison.

Depends on the hero, imo.

I liked Superman vs The Elite because it showcased what he stood for.  It doesn't matter if it's practical or not, he is the hero who always finds another way.

Someone like Ollie or Castle is a different story, because they were never inspirations in the first place.  They're highly flawed characters, who make mistakes and probably CAN't find another way, because they're only human.

On the extreme end of that, you have Tommy Monaghan, and his time with the JLA.

Barry is, imo, one of those inspirational figures.

I was never a fan, but its hard to wrap my head around someone making such a mistake.

I don't know, maybe it really was a joke in bad taste, that happened to kill her career.

But just a "for my information", say she decided she wanted to quit..  Would she be bounf by a contract against it?

Unless she said something so phenomally bigoted that they were forced to cut her loose?

The stealth prequel to Battlestar Galactica.  :)

The machines have taken over.  Each episode has been a focus on a single character, which is something I enjoy, and is what made Battlestar so good.

Anyone else watching?  And am I crazy for liking the old man in the black hat?

Lando is bi, apparently.

Totally not a publicity stunt.  I'm sure they weren't hoping the millions and millions of fans would need rage on twitter and tumblr and Reddit and YouTube and give them free advertising.

Nope, this move has no ulterior motives whatsoever.  Just like turning Thor into a woman didn't.

I mean, it's not like there wasn't moral outrage and a snubbing from critics over not turning Iron Fist Asian.  That would be silly.

Edit:  I'm told it's actually "pan sexual".

Meaning he'd do it with...  anything.  C-3PO.

Not sure if I should be annoyed or bemused here.

Maybe where you live. On the west side of Los Angeles, it's always spring.

Lot of pollen and such down there?

Here, we have so much of it, it sometimes looks like the grounds covered in snow.

This cut and paste went sour, so editing:

The local news reported parents are sueing their 30 year old loafer to leave.  I posted an article to that effect, then asked why they don't just throw the bum out, and call the police if he refuses.  And asked if the stupid politicians enacted laws to protect these parasites from being forcibly removed at will.

Since then, I did a little googling, and as it turns out:

https://www.thestreet.com/story/12869087/1/how-to-kick-your-adult-slacker-out-of-the-house-how-to-toss-the-boomerang-kid.html

Quote
Can you legally throw out an adult child without a legal eviction?
Question Details: A 22-year-old moved back in with parents almost a year ago and will not follow rules (keep his room clean or work more than two days a week to afford his bill or pay his own way).
So what happens when the arrangement turns sour?
There are different legal avenues which apply to different circumstances that parents can pursue. One is an “action of ejectment.” An eviction would be used if there is a landlord- tenant relationship. But absent this, the ejectment is the procedure.
Ejectments come into play if the slacker is living in a vacation home or a house the parents were using for a rental property or a property they that they are putting up for sale. This involves going to court and getting an order to vacate the property.
The other option is a "defiant trespass." This comes into play if the slacker is living in the parents' house and refuses to leave.
“If the child is an adult, the parents have no legal obligation to house him,” said Pat Biswanger of the law firm of Palmarella and Curry, in suburban Philadelphia. “In the case of an adult child who refuses to leave, the parents can call the police and ask them to prosecute the child for defiant trespass. If the police won’t do it for some reason, the parents can go to the magisterial district justice and file a private complaint for defiant trespass and get a court order telling the child to leave.”

"Legal action"?

Not even just against an overstaying kid, but it sounds like there's protections for guests in general.  That is ridiculous!

See why I hate the legal system?  Notices of eviction, a big, complicated legal process..  Sounds like a money grab to me.  Why let people do something for free, like call the police on a 30 something year old trespasser, when we can create a series of "protections" that let the courts get their pound of flesh.
