You can read and backtrack through the story.
Long story short, Anthony was taking pictures of New York at night, a woman took offense to having her picture taken so she walked over and started punching him.
The woman happened to be black, and Anthony happens to be a bit of a racist, so he went on Twitter and rambled about what a savage she was and how a lot of black people act like animals by resorting to violence as a first resort of conflict resolution.
Sirius fired him.
I'm cancelling my subscription ASAP.
-
Yeah, he is not a fan of the minorities. Of course, that's because he has had bad experiences in the past, like being assaulted by them.
The show will be cancelled or Opie will just threaten to quit. Maybe do what Stern did when they fired Robin and just give the worst radio possible until they had to bring her back.
-
The thing about what happened, is that 5 black guys came up and started harassing him, after she punched him, and he was in a no-win situation, which further fueled the rant.
-
shitty situation that he handled as poorly as possible. if he was funny i'd give more of a fuck, but you could put any two idiots in their spots and just let the comics be funny.
-
Without knowing what he said to her to provoke her reaction, it's hard to justify such a rant.
I imagine someone could do some digging about the woman and release her name, occupation, etc. in retaliation.
-
Guy is claiming he walking around Times Square with a gun. Moron.
EDIT: I guess I'm reading now that he had a permit for it.
-
There is no way Opie and Norton take this with grace and civility, and will basically force Sirius to rehire Anthony or buy them out.
Since Stern does like 5 shows a year now, they are basically their biggest attraction. I think they jumped the gun unless there were a few tweets with the N word.
-
Lol @ them being a bigger draw than stern.
-
Stern doesn't really do radio anymore, he has his TV projects. He has more reruns than original content. So, the question is "Are Opie & Anthony a bigger draw than a man who isn't there?".
http://variety.com/2014/digital/news/few-sirius-xm-subscribers-are-staying-for-howard-stern-study-shows-1201067292/ (http://variety.com/2014/digital/news/few-sirius-xm-subscribers-are-staying-for-howard-stern-study-shows-1201067292/)
95% said they would not pay extra for Stern. Sirius doesn't keep ratings on their shows, or so they say, so it is impossible to say for certain that O&A were more popular with radio, but it's almost a certainty that when his contract is up, Sirius won't offer him a new one. $100 Million for what?
-
He does 3 four hour shows a week. His star studded bday show was put on his site. Free to view for anyone.
I think he's added to his audience thx to agt.
-
You sure? I've been reading and hearing about how he doesn't do a lot of shows anymore for awhile now. I never really bothered to verify because I don't listen to radio. Even O&A who I like I will just hear clips on YouTube. Not going to listen for hours when the best parts are in 10 minute YouTube chunks.
Either way, I would still be surprised if Anthony isn't rehired quickly. Their show isn't exactly PC, and I know they have used the N word before many times, although only to quote other people.
-
i think he has like 8 weeks of vacation which he uses mostly for AGT.
but yeah, he does 3 4 hour shows a week - usually, mon, tues, and weds.
-

Strongly disagree, Anthony is hilarious and they're a really good team. Opie will never be appreciated for being the show captain that he is. I think Opie missed a show once and it was not good.
Jimmy Nordon said on his Twitter that Anthony has made him laugh harder than any human being alive for the past 10 years.
-
I like Stern and O&A. Stern's interview channel is great.

You are literally the first person I've seen like both. It seems the vast majority of fans love one and hate the other.
I don't listen to either, but I do think Stern is an underrated interviewer when he's not asking penis questions.

those are the best questions.
i dont listen to o&a. heard them a couple times in clips, but the clips were usually pointing out something stupid they said.
-
so is anyone looking for this bitch that attacked him, or is him being slightly racist in the aftermath of being punched the real crime?

I suppose she's in the picture that Anthony was taking that supposedly kicked the whole thing off, but if he didn't call the cops then, I don't think he's going to call them now.
-
I may cancel my subscription.
-
I may cancel it after I hear them respond. I'd hate to leave Opie and the crew hanging, but hell I'm really hoping Opie comes on and says "Your mom's box" and there's dead air for two hours.
-
I guess today was their first day back.

Audio starts several minutes in.
-
That was some pretty rough radio, at least they didn't let the Situation on.
-
anyone wanna give the cliff notes version? im interested, but not 3 hours interested.
-
I'm only about 30 minutes in - but the main takeaway so far is that there was no realistic way they could just refuse to show up for work out of solidarity with Anthony. They totally disagree with the decision to fire him, and they feel like if they could've gotten back in the day after the incident to joke about it, the whole thing would've blown over. Also, Sirius apparently told Opie that the reason they fired Anthony was less about the racism in the tweets, but the implied violence in them.
-
that twitter ends more careers.
-
The show was kinda interesting, it picked up when The Great Ronnie B showed up.
-
that twitter ends more careers.
Sure does... The biggest problem here is one of context. I wouldn't say Anthony is a classic racist by any stretch, but having said that, he absolutely HATES popular black underclass culture, and white underclass culture too, for that matter. He's hardly alone in that. Nothing he tweeted was even racist, and I'd suggest that anyone who automatically thinks "black people" when they hear somebody call someone else a savage might be the real racist and the one with the problem. Plus, Opie said Sirius/XM fired Anthony because they felt the tweets were overtly violent, not racist.
-
Well, the counterpoint is that he's a famous guy (famous enough to draw heat on Twitter) so he should know that if he posts shit like "they're savages" and "they're not people" immediately after saying "I called her a #*#*# because SHE IS" that it's POSSIBLY going to end in a way he didn't want it to end.
I'm pro Anthony here, but without trying to put a qualification on it. He said some offensive stuff, but he should be allowed to say that stuff and let the marketplace decide (via ratings not via special interest groups threatening Sirius) if it's a firing offense or not.
-
Anthony starts his own show on August 4th.

they still get other awesome comics on there. as long as they have that, i don't care which opies or anthonies get fired.

Man their whole discussion of the movie Independence Day is one of my favorite radio moments ever. Patrice was making me piss my pants laughing talking about Will Smith knocking out the alien's outfit and Heebie Kikeberger dad. Look it up if you can, amazing.

Vos killed this week, and Jim Florentine and Roland talking about "rom coms" was hilarious
-
Vos has been on fire. I hope they hire him as third chair and make it the Opie & Jim Show.
