That Alistair Overeem sure is brave and courageous.  Sure he got KTFO, but I really respect that he tried.  Cuz it's not like 100's of dudes do UFC every year.

Starfucker more concerned about bumping fists with Bruce Buffer and smiling at the crowd than the fight ain't what I call 'focused."

Takes a lot of courage to use Vince's $$$ to go to fantasy camp.

Sports Discussion / NBC World Series

My hometown team, the Hays Larks defeated Roger Clemens' team of ex-MLB players in a semi-final last night, 9-6 in 17 innings.   Daniel James pitched 8 brilliant innings of scoreless relief for the win.
Santa Barbara and San Diego started play after midnight and went 12 innings with Santa Barbara winning.

I have 3 hours to decide if I'm driving to Wichita or not and hoping to get tickets at the box office, lol.

As a big Larks fan, and a fan of the NBC world Series I have to rate this years Series as one of the best in it's 82 year history.

Tonight's championship game will be on ESPNU, I highly recommend any baseball fans, or sports fans in general, to tune in and watch NBC Hall of Famer Frank Leo and The Larks attempt to win their first championship against powerhouse Santa Barbara who have won 5 of the last 10 championships.

Notable ex-Larks include Jim Leyritz, Jack Wilson, Lance Berkman and Albert Pujols.

Daniel James pitches for UT Arlington and is my newest favorite baseball player.  Kid is gonna be a star and you heard it here first!

I'd be interested in a film that covered the time from the Resurrection to the Ascension.

Though probably not exactly the story you are thinking of, 2016's Risen was a pretty darn good film.  I took my mom to see this and was pleasantly surprised.
The film follows the story of the Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension from the perspective of a Roman soldier, Joseph Fiennes, who puts in a tremendous performance.   I'd Put Fiennes' performance with Alden Ehrenreich's in Hail, Caesar! as the best I've seen this year.
Tom Felton was a very bizarre casting choice that didn't quite work for me and I'm conflicted on Cliff Curtis' turn as Jesus.  He wasn't bad, but something was a bit off-putting for me.  IDK.
The actors who portray the Apostles were a real treat.  None of these guys have Wikipedia pages, but I'm sure that will change soon, as I'd expect most of them start getting regular acting gigs based off what they did here.
The film looks great, the director and DP did great work here.
I hated the narrative structure of the film being told in flashback, but felt it was handled a billion times better than In The Heart Of The Sea, inasmuch as Risen doesn't repeatedly revisit the storyteller.  Risen keeps this aspect confined to bookends and lets you forget about it, whereas Howard's film keeps going back to Michelle Fairley's horrible 'performance' throughout the film.

The best part?   This film was 107 minutes and felt like 80.   There was none of the forced 'epicness' that I typically expect from a 'Jesus movie.'

I could've sworn SCB had a thread and review of Risen, but I couldn't find it.

Maybe this is that start of a storyline centered around the title with he and Miz?

They possibly had the segment of the night on a pretty decent RAW.

I hope they get a feud and PPV matches, because they showed good chemistry.

World Tag League teams announced. It's basically like the G1 where it's a round robin tournament made up of two blocks

Rumors of La Sombra to WWE have been swirling for awhile, and Evil being announced as Naito's partner has only fueled these.

Naito even randomly showed up in Mexico a couple of weeks ago, palling around with Los Ingobernables.

Fuck IndyCar.

And fuck me for recommending to my friends that they watch this race because it would be "ultra dangerous" and "somebody might die."

I was watching this race with my jaw on the floor.  Blown away with what these men and women do.  Astounded that they can do this and live to tell the tale.

General Discussion / Re: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
« on: June 04, 2015, 03:37:50 PM »

Brainless fucking explosions and no characters or plot ARE the lowest common denominator, Torgo.

When I say this is a Mad max movie for people who don't like Mad max movies, it's not hyperbole.

Mad Max is one of those few late 70's/early 80's films I never got around to seeing and I tried watching them recently and really couldn't get into them,

I said at the start I didn't need to watch any of the original Mad Max films because Mad Max isn't really a character in this film, he's almost a prop inserted so the title can sell the real movie

Of the three, I think only 'Road Warrior' was decent. The first 'MM' was pretty dull

I'll be honest the first two did nothing for me.

When I say there's no plot, I'm not trolling just for the sake of it.

an epic two hour car chase is really the plot

Yeah there's no plot

If they tried to come up with a plot for this, it might have come off too stupid or ridiculous.

When I say there are no characters....

so much action and seemingly so little character

And even then, you don't get too deep in character with her.

I call it a heartless fucking cashgrab because it so obviously is.

If he needs to keep using Mad Max in the title for the studios to fund him

When I say Miller doesn't know or care when the movie takes place in relation to the other films, and he doesn't know or care who the Hardy character is, it's beacause this is shit Miller has ACTUALLY said.  But hey, he felt like the Gibson character to you!

He felt like the same character to me.

Let's compare this to, I don't know, let's say, Wreck-It-Ralph.

Wreck-It-Ralph is a movie made by computers and is about video games.   However it doesn't feel like you are watching a video game.  Feels like you're watching a movie with a plot, characters, and a point beyond making money off a previously established franchise.  While Wreck-It-Ralph definitely engages in some of the cliche tropes of Pixar style movies, it's development can't be directly defined by what animated films came out the years previous to it.   Unlike Miller's Happy Feet which was clearly a post Finding Nemo cash grab in the vein of Madagascar, Rio, Ice Age etc.

Kubrick used virtually no artificial light when filming Barry Lyndon.  There are incredible scenes filmed by candlelight.  That shit is hard to do and requires dedication and artistic reasoning.  Contrast with Fury Road where all the night scenes were filmed during the day in front of a green screen, then computer colored to look like night.  So everybody could get home by 5, I assume.

If Fury Road came out 10 years ago it would have looked a lot like The Matrix.  People would have been wearing sunglasses and trenchcoats, and the would have been lots of computer stuff going on.  Computer hacker biker gangs and such.   But it came out in 2015 in a post Game of Thrones, Lord of the Hobbits, The 300 world, and so it looks like all that instead.

Maybe I troll Punk and Austin related threads with my unwelcome opinions.  But I don't follow you around trolling every post you make on the board, Torgo.  I could give a fuck about you or your shitty opinions.

I have long held the opinion that the amount of noise anyone can bear undisturbed stands in inverse proportion to his mental capacity and may therefore be regarded as a pretty fair measure of it.

Makes Road Warrior look like BORED WARRIOR!

Grit, realism, plot and characters are BORING.

Plus Road Warrior looks like it was a pain in the ass to make.  Everybody looks hot and unhappy.  Seems like they had to work really hard.  All that 'art through adversity' shit has been finally debunked thanks to Miller's brilliant masterpiece and it's comfortable, sterile, computer generated awesomeness.

The courage and bravery of Miller to not know or care when his move takes place, or whether Hardy's character is the Gibson Max character or The Feral Kid or some other shit is almost overwhelming.

When did Miller start working for The Asylum anyway?  And does this mean I can look forward to a Sharknado/Babe 2: Pig in the City mashup?

Austin's fantasy booking is some of the worst shit I've ever heard.

Mark Henry should be beating Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Kevin Owens etc.  with a fucking headlock?  And now nobody can do headlocks?

I can imagine Austin beign supportive of being told prior to a Mania match with brock that he can't use any punches because of the Big Show, he can't use any kicks because of Daniel Bryan, he can't use any chinlocks because of Rusev, he can't use any headlocks because he gave that to Henry, he can't use any armbars because of Becky Lynch.

And unless he's going over he can't use the Stunnner because nobody can kick out of finishers.

Did anybody tell Austin they made a $12 million gate this year at Mania?  They know where the money is.

Speaking of which, I assume "Where's the money?" or variants thereupon ("Where's my money") are on the top-10 list of things Paul Heyman has been asked most in his life.

Speaking of which, boy that Austin sure asked all the hard hitting questions, huh?  Not like that sycophant kiss ass Jericho.

Since Punk left I'm not sure there is anybody on the WWE roster who I actively dislike.

I watch NXT every week, I watch the PPV's, I watch RAW and Superstars once every few weeks,  I rarely watch Smackdown.  I watch and hour or two of CMLL's terrible television every week.

I just dont like Austin.

I didn't like him in WCW.  I hated the Hollywood Blondes.  I hated him in WWE.  I hated the advent of the 15 minute RAW opening monologue with Austin doing and saying the same shit week in and week out.  His character and personality don't engage or interest me.  I'm from Kansas and know plenty of Austin types and it just isn't my scene.  The Attitude era wasn't my scene and Super Austin is probably the biggest example why.

Like Austin or quit watching?  Fuck that.

I'm not gonna stop watching Barbaro Cavernario being awesome just because 'gimmie a hell yeah' makes me fucking cringe.

What is Kevin Owens catchphrase?   What is Sami Zayns?  What is Dean Ambroses?  Austin spent half the podcast burying everybody's promos for being different than his, but now all pro wrestle promos are the same, so if I don't like Austins I'm a hypocrite because I can watch a Becky Lynch promo and not feel pandered to or feel like Im being treated like a retard?  Confusing.

Busy last night, didn't watch RAW and didn't watch this live.

Got online late to check the ole cut and paste news sites to see what happened and saw lots of 'Heated exchange on Austin's podcast!" headlines.   I read no further and loaded this shit up on the Network.

Got to the part where Steve asked Paul why the Jews control all the diamonds, Hollywood and the banks and figured that was the 'heated exchange' that had everybody in a huff.

Turns out the heated exchange was the cripple doing "Catchphrase Promo #2" at the end.    Yawn.

This movie was a fucking piece of shit.

Went home and watched Attack of the Clones.

Blatant fucking cash grab bullshit.

This movie was fucking retarded and unreal.  I love the Mad Max movies.  this wasn;t a Mad Max movie.   It was a fucking video game

I guess its part of Millenial culture to enjoy watching other people play video games, but I dont fucking get it.   There's no tension in the action scenes that are just video game characters doing video game shit.

Filmmaking is a collaborative effort and its clear (much like the SW prequels) that when you remove from the equation those with the balls to question fucking stupid decisions, you end up with a pile of rubbish.
M

I hated the 300 but it's not like Zach Snyder tried to make a movie that looked like or aped Mad Max.  Peter Jackson wasn't trying to rip off Mad Max when he made LOTR.  Why does Miller need to ape theses guys to make a Mad max movie.   This was The 300 meets LOTR meets james Bond as done by Tarentino.   Cash grab lowest comon denominator garbage.  Aside from some obvious Blade Runner homages, the Star Wars prequels are stylistically original.  Which is WAY more than I can say for Fury Choad.

I havent seen the new Avengers yet, but I'm sure I shouldve went to that instead.

Michael Cole called Kofi Xavier and vice versa. Hysterical.

Less noticed by the IWC is that JBL also called Cesaro 'Kidd' at one point.  I guess the "he can't tell white people apart" talking point isn't as grabby?

Wrestling announcers slip up on names all the fucking time.  How many times did Jim Ross call Christian 'Edge' or Matt Hardy 'Jeff'?

The 'Cole has an out-of-touch, blind, racist Vince in his ear mixing up black dudes names' talking point is nothing more self-congratulatory IWC confirmation-bias bullshit.

Yeah Torgo, EC spent LITERALLY months complaining that Vince makes his mind up too early and won't change it, and had to change his criticisms to the exact opposite in the days following Mania.

Now you want him to change his criticisms back to what they initially were? No way!  He'll look like a fucking moron who spins any situation to bitch about Vince's supposed incompetence.
