2015 Chicago Cubs Thread
« on: August 14, 2015, 12:10:48 AM »
So we're doing pretty good this year. As SouthpawJosh said a while back on the podcast, this is a multi-year plan. We're seeing the benefits of it now.

Seven game winning stream and 13 out of the last 14 won. We're in third, one game out of second, and in the second Wild Card spot.

The Atlanta Braves?  They stink and don't deserve their own thread.   :(

Funny that you mention the Cubs and Braves, back in 1981 I was getting into sports, and I decided  that I needed a baseball team to root for. As the Rockies were 12 years away (and many would say they're not really here now), and we had just gotten cable, I had the choice of the Braves on WTBS or the Cubs on WGN. I chose the Cubs, partially because of Harry Caray, partially due to remembering seeing the exterior of Wrigley Field, briefly, in "The Blues Brothers".

I've rooted for, and suffered with, my northsiders ever since. Ryno in '84. The '89 division winners. The heartbreak of the Bartman series against the Marlins. (That poor guy didn't deserve what he got.)The lights being turned on in '88. (And the massive rainstorm that ensued, informing us the baseball gods were angry.) And the most recent upgrades being pursued.

Of course, the happiest day of my life was May 3, 2014, when I finally climbed the stairs on the first base line, and Wrigley Field opened itself up to me. Seeing Anthony Rizzo and Junior Lake hit home runs and Jake Arrieta's arm defeating the Cardinals. I could have had a heart attack at Clark and Addison and died happy.

So, it does this old "Cable Cub Fan's" heart good to see this youth movement, and how Theo Epstein has been quietly building a team that will make fans happy for years to come. Adding Joe Maddon was a masterstroke. And the team is responding. I need to plan another trip to Wrigley once this cancer crap is resolved. This team is truly fun to watch come together.

Funny thing about that was I have always been a Braves fan, but one of my favorite players (if not my favorite) is Andre Nolan Dawson.  Why?  I saw him play for the Cubs on WGN.

The day that ground ball went through Leon Durham's legs in 1984... My world died a little...

No hitter thrown by Jake Arrieta tonight against the Dodgers.

This is local but Cubs related

The Cards have requested not to have any weekend games with the Cubs starting next season.  Seems like there is always fights and other stuff going on down at Busch when the Cubs are in town and I guess games during the week do not pull as many Cubs fans down here.

Oh and Cubs suck.  We will beat them as normal :)

While you can't say The Cardinals are a better team than The Cubs, you can say that they are as good of a team. Factoring in playoff numbers, they had a near 50-50 record against each other. Objectively speaking this series could have gone either way. A few years back before the second wildcard, The Cubs wouldn't have even made the playoffs despite winning 97 games.

That said, bring on the pennant series!

As a lifelong Cardinals fan congrats to long suffering Cubs fans.  Good to see we will have a good rivalry for the next few years if not more.

Okay ... I know that the Cubs have been compared to the Red Sox because of Theo... but did they really have to go down 0-3 in an LCS, while playing a New York team too?

OK we lost, but unlike other years there is a long term game plan.

Win lose or draw, I am a Cub Fan.

I turned it off before D'Arnaud's HR landed. I wasn't going to suffer for another 3 hours. I agree, there is a good plan in place, and this one didn't hurt as bad as '03, '07, and '08... I don't feel it will take as long to get to the post season again, like I did in those years.

I don't believe in that theory of rooting for the Mets because they rep the NL. Screw that. I want to see the Royals or Blue Jays win.

Everyone here at the workplace was patting me on the back and asking if I was OK this morning after last night. Like Josh, I was already turning it to Jeopardy before d'Arnaud's HR landed, but I actually turned it back - the Cubs, even in defeat, keep my interest more than your average episode of "Raw" these days.

As I told my co-workers, normally, the Cubs season usually ends before the Fourth of July, so to have a rooting interest in my club in late October is nothing to sneeze at. This is a young club who will now have postseason experience - and the confidence to go out and beat the Pirates and Cardinals next season. Yes, I'm flying the "wait 'til next year" banner for the 34th straight season of my Cubs fandom, but I am optimistic for season 35.

Honestly, considering my health issues this year, the Cubs were a positive light that I really needed...
