One of the forerunners of the modern "heel". Frequently would cheap shot opponents and taunt fans. Was considered a top contender for most world titles. Wrestled many of the all-time greats, including feuding with Buddy Rogers early in his career. Father of Greg "The Hammer" Valentine. Career ended in the infamous 1975 plane crash that also involved Ric Flair, Mr. Wrestling, and David Crockett.

Arguably the greatest wrestler to never hold a major world title. Infamous Dog Collar Match with Feuded with Hulk Hogan during the Hulkamania boom period. Memorable feuds with Ric Flair, Greg Valentine, The Sheepherders, and Jimmy Snuka. Golden Glove boxer and a Judo black belt before getting into wrestling.
