Karate Kid (80's version)
« on: February 14, 2017, 12:59:48 AM »
What if Miyagi refused to heal Danny's leg?  Think he'd have earned enough respect from the Kai kids that they'd lay off/accept him?

He didn't want to. Daniel talked him into it. I don't think the Kai's would have respected him. In their eyes they would have won and Daniel would have been weak.

Daniel coming back after the leg injury was the equivalent of kicking out of a finisher, it changed everything

And I got to say, the rules of that tournament were kinda fucked, tbh. First, Bobby Brown gets disqualified for some sort of jump kick where he barely hits Daniel in the thigh. Then, he fights Johnny, and suddenly it's apparently legal to catch Daniel's foot and try to break his leg of at the knee. Then Johnny lands a clean punch to Daniel's face in an exchange - no points are awarded - even though contact to the head is supposedly legal. A fact conveniently remembered in the film's climax, when Daniel nearly murders Johnny with the Crane Kick to the head.

Poor Johnny got hosed, I think.

Never forget, Daniel started the big fight with his bathroom antics.

Not sure around the rules about the jump kick and the elbow to the knee (which I think he was warned for) but I specifically remember the punch to the face being called a clash and it wasn't a scoring strike.

I don't know if that was right or wrong, but t'was what I remember.

Yeah, it was a clash - Johnny's fist CLASHED with Daniel's stupid face!!

Also, Daniel was something like 24 when he competed in this tournament. Poor Johnny had to fight a grown-ass man.

Stupid face indeed.  It's almost painful how ignorant they make him sound.

Even the movie knew the romantic subplot made no sense.

Part 2 was on Starz last night and it should've been part 3. Daniel took three steps back in part 3 as a fighter and as a person.

And it's funny Miyagi says in part 1 the crane kick when done right is unstoppable, and in part two, it got stopped

If Daniels the asshole, what does that make Johnny?  The nice guy?  ;)

Part 3 was just stupid.

I mean, all of them could have ended with "and then he called the police.  The end."  But 3 went way past over the top into Family Guy style farce.

Mr. Miyagi:  Why you sign this?

Daniel:  They left me stranded at the bottom on a cliff to drown.

Mr. Miyagi:  Oh.  Is that all?
