The Defenders 2017
« on: August 18, 2017, 01:01:47 PM »
I just finished the first episode. So far so good. Sigourney Weaver has such a presence.  The first scene felt like The Highlander.

Got to episode 6, which has been the best so far.  I love the storyline so far.  If you haven't seen the other shows it might be a little confusing but I think you could still follow it.

It was only 8 episodes so I finished it.  There was a lot of predictability due to obvious character flaws which kept it interesting. I like a show where there's always someone whose doing something to keep things interesting. This show gave us 2, I thought.

Anyway, Sigourney is awesome.  Scott Glenn did a great job too.

The other thing I liked about the show is how it kept the other characters of each respective show relevant and involved for the most part.

Only complaint I have is that it was only 8 episodes.  I was expecting more so it just ended on me suddenly when I was waiting for a major twist to come up to keep it going for the normal 13

Overall I thought this season was well done, especially in the action scenes. But I do have some nitpicky complaints.

With the Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist shows, I sort of felt like the seasons were a bit too long with not quite enough action. Then the Defenders gave me what I thought I wanted; fewer episodes with a ton of fight scenes. But somehow, it was almost too much. Like RealMarchHare said, this season felt a bit short. I think the action could have had more impact if there had been some more story interspersed, and a couple more episodes of plot. Some more backstory on the five fingers of the Hand would have been nice, or some more scenes to at least make the organization seem like a more serious threat. In fact there were so many fight scenes packed into the last few episodes that I kind of started tuning them out, because they all started to look the same. Not sure if I'm just difficult to please, or if there is a happy medium in there that has yet to be found.

Jessica Jones is still the weakest link in the Netflix Universe. Her acting is fine, but she is just god awful in the fight scenes. They also didn't do a very good job of reminding people what her powers are...for anyone that didn't watch the JJ miniseries, they were probably wondering what she was doing mixing it up with the other enhanced folks. Likewise with Daredevil...they didn't do a great job of highlighting his enhanced senses, they just kind of made it seem like he has super hearing. For people that have followed the DD seasons, this isn't a problem. But they could have tossed in a couple of scenes of his "world on fire" perception of reality (or however he described it).

I kept waiting for a scene where Sigourney Weaver showcases some kind of fighting skill or special power, to justify her being the leader of the Hand. But it never came. She had no backstory, no real character development. Sig managed to give her a good screen presence, but that was simply acting skill. The character did not display anything all that evil or impressive or memorable. She was just kind of there and we had to accept that she was the leader of this supposedly ancient and all-powerful criminal organization.

I did like the Elektra turn, that was the only thing that I didn't see coming. But after that, the rest of the show was rather dull and predictable.

I hope they do another Defenders season, and I also hope that they are done with the Hand for a while. Seems like only Madam Gao, and maybe the Japanese guy are left anyway.

I enjoyed the Defenders, but I feel like it could have been better.

There was a scene where they showed Sigourney's fighting style and it was obvious she was holding back during Elektra's flashback.

I agree with your analysis of the JJ problem.  It was hard to tell her power at times.

I agree they could have spent a whole episode on the Hand and added to the story.  Gao could be a dynamic character if allowed.

Because Disney owns Star Wars now and everybody has to pay tribute to Empire Strikes Back.

Maybe not in the Netflix-verse but that was the idea in the movies.

Looks like a lot of places are, but you still get relatively recent ones like "stats prove Iron Fist ruined Defenders" and "10 ways you can fix Iron Fist" (Ranging from "Cut him out" to "Make him even more of a doofus so we can at least laugh at him")

Imo, Finn Jones improved a LOT from the last show.  He really nailed modern Danny Rands character, and imo his choreography is keeping pace just fine with Charlie Cox (When it's the actors and not stunt doubles).

JJ fighting was cringy.  People complained about Finn Jones' fighting in Iron Fist but it at least looked good.  May have been a little slow and sloppy but still worked.  Krysten Ritter clearly has no fight training and looked like a fish out of water every time she had to fight.  The other problem is because of that you question what she brings to the table.  Yea she's super strong but so is Luke Cage and he at least can take bullets or knives or anything.  She can't.  So every fight scene I'm left wondering "How the fuck did she not die in that?!" with how wooden and unmotivated her fighting was.

Sig was fantastic but definitely needed more back story on The Five Fingers of The Hand to help explain the motivation and evilness.  Especially since the new ones they introduced were pretty cool but gone real quick.  This goes back to my being to short.  An entire episode could have been done in K'un-Lun on how they all met and why they left.  Also, are they ever going to acknowledge that Madame Gao is Crane Mother?

The Elektra turn was the most obvious thing and with it happening in like..episode 6 or 7 which is midway through a normal season and when they tend to do their plot twist reveal to set up the second half (Jessica living with Killgrave, Punisher gets caught and goes to jail, Cottonmouth is killed and Diamondback steps in, The Hand is controlling Danny's company) really drove home how much shorter this was as well.

Zandrax they're not paying tribute to Empire Strikes Back.  They're paying tribute to A New Hope.  Obi-Wan started the long tradition of removing arms/hands from characters :P

The show is clearly doing its own thing with regards to power levels, but it's not uncommon in comics to see non steel hard skinned characters bloody him up.  Iron Fist and Scorpion are two examples.  Black Panther also took him down with pressure point strikes..

As for the show, remember Cage was just gassed by Stick when Elektra took him out.  That had to have weakened him somewhat, and Elektra is far from an ordinary figher, what with The Hand better everything on her being an ultimate badass..

I'm old enough that "A New Hope" just sounds like bullshit to me. That wasn't on the screen when I saw it first run at the RKO Fordham

I debated whether to just say Star Wars or A New Hope.  Settled on A New Hope just because most people here Star Wars and think of the series as a whole now.  Seems a lot of people forget the original didn't have a subtitle or episode number.

Defender is really good in general.  Bendis is finishing his tenure at Marvel with some of his best work, imo.
