Sci-Fi/Fantasy R1: Paul Atreides vs. Lando Calrissian
« on: September 14, 2010, 08:49:02 AM »

Before his transformation into the Kwisatz Haderach, Paul Atreides displayed the proud, superior traits of an heir to a royal house. He became insulted when the Revend Mother told him that the Gom Jabbar poison she held to his throat would kill only an animal, and retaliated, asking if she was calling the son of a duke an animal. His pride was turned to anger later in his life, when he was abandoned by the Harkonnens in the desert. At this point, the visions he had been having changed him into someone who was discerning and strong of character, rather than proud. His powers made him act as superior in the presence of others, even causing him to be deified. This deification made him all the more grand in scope, but eventually, after his blindness, lead him to realize his time had passed. When Paul returned as The Preacher, his personality had changed greatly. He saw himself only as a shadow of the man he once was, and acted as such. Though only forty two years old, he was crippled, blinded, and appeared many years older than he was in truth. This appearance of aged wisdom that he displayed at the time was the cause for his success as a "preacher", when setting speaking out againts Alia's reign and his own religion.

Aside from the Bene Gesserit powers of Prana-Bindu meditation Paul had been taught by his mother, he also possessed powers of foresight and prescience, allowing him to see both the now and the now to come. These powers were limited, but appeared at crucial moments, such as when Scytale appeared before him, in disguise as Lichna, and Paul was able to see through the disguise. Another show of this power came to him before his death, when he suddenly became able to see through his conscious son's eyes. Why this happened is still subject to speculation, but the bond that existed between them, infused with the Water of Life and the Spice in their blood, that made them linked, as would a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother be linked to her predecessors at her time of rite.

Landolio Archimedes Calrissian Jr. is a legendary Armenian-American intergalactic pilot and Colt 45 enthusiast. Lando is probably best known for a series of FUI (Flying Under The Influence) incidents which resulted in the destruction of Empire Carpet's Death Star Nine battle station. Experts generally agree that Lando is the most awesome person to ever exist.

Born at the age of five to Neo-Armenian parents, Skip and Betty Calrissian, young Lando was piloting spacecraft soon after. Calrissian was born with his trademark mustache and it's impossible to shave it off. He got his flight certification after completing a six parsec track course in a 1953 Studebaker Starliner that he still flies to this day. Young Calrissian frequented the dragstrips around all the spaceports where he quickly earned the nickname Leisure Suit Lando, due to his choice of racing attire. The dragstrip was referred to as "The Land Of Lando", because he had one of the fastest ships around. Legend has it that his ship, the Aluminum Falcon  had a competition clutch with a four-on-the-floor, and purred like a kitten until the ion engines roared. Lando amassed himself a small fortune racing the Falcon from starport to starport, often leaving a burnout patch when he left.

It was during one of his races that Lando literally ran into who would become one of his closest friends: fellow scoundrel pirate Han Solo. Lando thought he had struck a small piece of space debris, and kept flying for several parsecs. Finally, after hearing some pesky rattling he decided to check it out. There was Han, and the remains of his ship, crunched up in the front of The Falcon's nose. Han's first words were "Hey, can you drop me off at the next Starbuck's?" The two formed a friendship that lasted many years afterward.

If this is hand to hand, Lando's screwed.

If it's a scenario of preparation or strategy, Lando is screwed.

Paul can play tactics and strategy like Ender, and politics like his brother Peter, and he's a genius as fighting.   Defeated seasoned warriors rather easily, from a tribe of incredible warriors.

Plus, he has limited precognition.

That bio for Paul isn't great.  Paul has the power of Voice.  Similar to Jesse Custer's power.  He can control and kill people just with the tune and pitch of his words.  He's also a tactical genius and hand to hand expert (where he has the power of the weirding).

I'm sure he won't, but Paul should take this hands down.

Some may say I should turn in my geek card for admitting this but I never read any of the Dune books. So I had to resort to external sources for profiles.

I still voted Paul and I nominated Lando though.

Dune's not an easy one to just jump into (at least for me it wasn't).  Dense, slow, confusing...I owned the books for years before I read them.  I started the first one about five times before I forced myself to get through them.  But I was happy I read them once I finished.  I don't think the series is worthy of the all time classic status that some have tagged it with (the writing is so up its own ass at times), but the books are thinkers and with some great great characters and fabulously imagined landscape (the world and the world).

I feel bad for taking any kind of shot at you Zandy (over the bio).  You are doing a great job and it's appreciated dude.
