Vote Display
« on: September 16, 2010, 10:29:07 AM »
There is a bit of controversy over how the polling is handled. In the past, voting was visible after somebody voted. This new board allows the ability to hide voting results until the poll expires. Another option allows for results to be displayed before you vote. Both sides have their good and bad sides.

VISIBLE BEFORE YOU VOTE

This option means all vote results are open before you vote. So you can see if somebody is losing badly before you vote. In some cases it might sway some votes or cause a poster to plead their case for voting.

HIDDEN UNTIL AFTER YOU VOTE

Similar to the above except you can only see the results after you've voted. So you may not know somebody is login badly unti after you vote.

HIDDEN UNTIL END OF VOTING

This option means all voting is hidden to posters (except us mods) until the poll expires. Of course this means you won't know how badly somebody is losing until after the vote is over and would avoid the empassioned pleas for votes by supporters. Conversely it can also help keep from troll votes.

So I leave it in the hands of you, the faithful A1 Posters. I see the voting either way so it makes no difference to me personally.

I say hidden until after you vote, with the stip that you can't change your vote.  Is this possible?

If you can change your vote still I don't see any reason to leave the results hidden at all like PhantomZ mentions.

Yes. Changing vote is an option the polster can add.

That seems to make sense then... the instant gratification of seeing the polls in progress after voting, without the ability to change your vote, would still allow people to "shill" for one character or another.

For instance, if I vote for Green Lantern instead of Vulcan, that's my vote.  If later on, someone brings up a point that makes me want to change my vote, I can just campaign for Vulcan on the board, even though my vote has already been tallied for GL.

I could dig that.

You may see someone's argument down the page that convinces you to change your vote.  So that option is good.

The hidden polls are good because it deters people for throwing a competitor a mercy vote (which could then turn out to be the winning vote).

I personally like the option to change vote because we've probably all voted for somebody and then regretted it.

also, if you allow people to see the results after they vote AND change their vote, I think you'll see people change their vote just so they can vote for the winner.

That, or change their vote to a mercy one so the vote is closer, which may end up skewing the results entirely, which I think someone has talked about before.

These are pretty black and white things we're voting on, though I will admit I have altered one of my picks due to conversation in the thread.  However, I can live with my ill informed vote since that's just how the world works.  I think seeing the results before your final vote in the matter is cast is a bad idea and in the end, we'll be dealing with more of a popularity contest than a Slugfest O Doom.

I'd like to heavily boo what ever it is you've done to the polls, Zandrax.

Way to suck the suspense and fun out of the whole thing.

It seems as though the overall view is to keep it the same as the old boards. I will make future battles under these conditions.
