I have Bell's Palsy
« on: February 24, 2013, 04:34:27 AM »

Recently, I went in for a regular dental checkup and almost immediately afterwards I noticed a funny pain in my mouth. At first, I contributed it to nerves (hey, I am going to a dentist).

Then, I started noticing I have troubling swallowing liquids and eating solid foods. I made a doctor's appointment and the doctor ran some physical tests. She then determined I had Bell's palsy.

Luckily, my face wasn't drooping entirely -- but I had sharp pains in my left eye and the left side of my face seemed to have no muscle control (couldn't hold a smile on my left side). I could really care less about that part, just more of the difficulty eating and drinking.
I was then placed on steroids which have helped me a lot but I seem to have a surplus of energy now. That's fine -- but it messes with my sleep schedule a bit.
So I figure I let you know what's going on since you haven't heard from me in awhile.

By the way, no Jim Ross jokes. ;)

Aw, POE.  I'm sorry man.

My sister-in-law got choked-out by her last boyfriend, ended up with half of her face fucked-up and droopy for two months.  Doctor's said it was Bell's Palsy, so here's to hope that your condition improves!

sucks to hear man, my friend's wife came down with it a few years ago...went away faster than I thought.  Here's to hoping you have the same fortune.

Physical tests?  So she diagnosed Bells Palsy from a single visit?  Did she give you a brain scan or anything?  Send you to a specialist or two?

Asking, because there's virtually a laundry list of things that can cause symptoms of BP, from brain tumors, strokes, lyme disease..  Forgive my questioning your doctor, as you know her better then I, but I've been a skeptic of medical professionals ever since my sister's persistent headache was brushed aside as a condition needing aspirin and sleep, when she was really slowly bleeding to death in her skull...

But it's good to hear the steroid treatments sound like they're relieving the symptoms.  If you have real trouble sleeping, don't be shy about telling you doctor!  I went through nearly six or seven days of 100% sleeplessness myself, and it didn't happen all at once.. The meds I was on built up gradually, until I hit the "can't sleep at all" point.  From a baby's dose, they told me.  And steroids can give you insomnia.

Good to have you back, Poe.   :drink_mini:

Well, the doctor did schedule a second visit and indicated that I would be getting a MRI if the symptoms don't change. Thankfully, she caught it in time.

She also tested me for a stroke and indicated that I was fine as far as that goes.

I had this last year at this time, it lasted about 3 weeks and it was diagnosed with one visit. The steriod and anti-viral give you slightly better results than nothing. I had to patch my eye for 10 days or so since I couldn't blink while I slept.

Generally your face comes back to normal. Mine did for the most part, but I think I have less control of my left side than before, but it isn't droppy.

I did not experience any pain, other than my eye being irritated from rubbing it because it was leaking before I realized my face was melting.

Good luck.
