Looking for a New Career
« on: March 06, 2016, 09:38:21 PM »
I have been a Bookkeeper on and off for about 14 years now, with a few years of bartending and being a burger salesman at TGIFridays in between. I'm at a stable job now and I can probably retire there if I wanted to, but I just hate the profession now. Aside from a year of college, I never really wanted to make the step to CPA and I still don't regret that.

So, been looking for a new career in any field. I've been looking at everything, from National Grid which is a gas utility company in NY to getting a brochure to be an Underwater Welder. Alas, the school is in Texas and not here.

Any advice or recommendations? You enjoy your careers?

Not related to what you do, but I do enjoy my career.  I have almost 16 years with two different K-12 organizations doing tech support.

Be a web developer. 2 years ago I knew nothing but the very basics of html, found out my local library had a free lynda.com account to all users(a website that teaches coding among other things). Took an hour a day studying the courses on css and very basic javascript, then moved on to php. Last year I got an entry level job that pays decent. Now a year later, a lot of options open up to work at a ton of places. In my years reading the board, you seem like  a fairly smart guy, picking it up won't be hard for you. Again, once you have a year or two on your resume and some work in your portfolio, you won't have to look very hard for work.

I do IT support as well but I would not recommend working for a college in IT support. When decisions are made by dum-dums who can barely power on a computer, there's problems. What to fund first? Why not some fuckin' gazebo? Or waste millions on a marketing campaign?

No, you can't download porn at work just because you've been here 30+ years teaching college students.

As soon as I find a position either a) at a better college or b) in the private sector as a system administrator, I'm splitting.
