Funny that you mention the Cubs and Braves, back in 1981 I was getting into sports, and I decided that I needed a baseball team to root for. As the Rockies were 12 years away (and many would say they're not really here now), and we had just gotten cable, I had the choice of the Braves on WTBS or the Cubs on WGN. I chose the Cubs, partially because of Harry Caray, partially due to remembering seeing the exterior of Wrigley Field, briefly, in "The Blues Brothers".
I've rooted for, and suffered with, my northsiders ever since. Ryno in '84. The '89 division winners. The heartbreak of the Bartman series against the Marlins. (That poor guy didn't deserve what he got.)The lights being turned on in '88. (And the massive rainstorm that ensued, informing us the baseball gods were angry.) And the most recent upgrades being pursued.
Of course, the happiest day of my life was May 3, 2014, when I finally climbed the stairs on the first base line, and Wrigley Field opened itself up to me. Seeing Anthony Rizzo and Junior Lake hit home runs and Jake Arrieta's arm defeating the Cardinals. I could have had a heart attack at Clark and Addison and died happy.
So, it does this old "Cable Cub Fan's" heart good to see this youth movement, and how Theo Epstein has been quietly building a team that will make fans happy for years to come. Adding Joe Maddon was a masterstroke. And the team is responding. I need to plan another trip to Wrigley once this cancer crap is resolved. This team is truly fun to watch come together.
