Topic: More things that annoy me..

Am I mistaken in believing (or am I the only one who's noticed) that native speakers of foreign languages don't appear to suffer the same rhetorical affects as many native English speakers?

Think how often you hear even intelligent native English speakers who can't complete a thought without saying 'um' or 'uh' or "like" or anything like that. Then, next time you're listening to people in dialogue who are clearly speaking a native foreign language, see if you can pick out similar linguistic hitches in the speakers' delivery. I don't think this requires you be able to understand the conversation.

I often find Eastern folks (India and area, some Eastern Europeans) often run the words "like you know" together when trying to explain a concept. I've asked folks that I work with about learning English and apparently it's very popular amongst those folks to learn English from TV. I still don't know how that promotes that phrase though.

I like John Oliver and his HBO show, and I think he's actually doing us a service by exploring topics about which we'd otherwise never hear. But I hate people who watch his show and suddenly act like they're some sort of expert on the subject he covered the week before.

When you work in an office building that has a common bathroom for everyone on a floor, and over a period of weeks or months you find yourself on the same pee-schedule with other people. And you've noticed it and they've noticed it, and the whole experience of going to the bathroom just gets awkward.

There's a stand-alone hand sanitizer dispenser at the bank I go to. Like a machine you probably need to order out of a catalog. They have it right where people go to get in line for the bank tellers.

Like freud, I have a phenomenal immune system and I hardly ever get sick, for which I credit my general "What, me worry?" attitude toward everyday germs and bacteria. Of course, what this means is that I will ultimately meet my demise at the hands of some Captain Trips-like superflu, which I will only catch because You People are such pussies about normal germs, that your pussy immune systems will make you viable carriers for said superbug.

So really, you all owe me a pre-emptive apology for being ultimate accessories to my eventual death.
