Ok, here's the deal. If CM Punk, on his way out, wants to work a program with John Cena and the WWE wants that program to happen, the fine. It'll probably be entertaining and might give us some good matches. While yeah, I'd prefer Punk be used to put someone else over who could use the rub, there's nothing inherently wrong with the idea. There might be better ideas out there, but it's not a bad idea.
This is pretty much how I feel. I have no real issue with Punk choosing to have his final feud before his layoff be with the company's biggest name. He gets to go out on the top of the card (such as it is) and will probably have a good feud with Cena.
I don't think he needs to put anyone over in the sense of making a new star because as much as I love Punk, he's not a guy who can make a mid carder a star at this point. One of the problems with the current WWE structure is that there are really only two guys who REALLY matter, Cena & Orton. Beating them means something, beating Punk (or Miz or Christian, etc...) means very little. At best you get elevated to the upper midcard level, where you become another interchangeable guy.
If anything, Punk's"best" role would be bringing a guy from obscurity to viability. Think about a guy like Chris Masters or even Zach Ryder. It'd be easy to create an insta-feud with either guy and working with an elite promo guy like punk would allow them to develop a new, more viable three dimensional character beyond their current ones.
