Tully Blanchard: One heck of a heel
« on: June 22, 2016, 02:28:05 PM »
Was there ever a more natural heel than Tully Blanchard? Everything about that guy made you hate him.  He was fantastic.

Tully vs Magnum is still a popular choice for the greatest match of all time. Who knew that they would soon both virtually vanish?

He looked like the Uncle who promised to take you to the Zoo but never showed up and then laughed when you called him out on it.

Great heel.

If you ask me what my favorite match ever is I am going to say that Starrcade 85 I Quit Cage match.  It really is incredible and I rewatched it a few weeks ago.  It still holds up.

Tully just had "it." His match psychology was as good as his persona.  People paid good money to watch that SOB get his. I wonder how many wrestlers today studied him.

One of the most intense things I ever saw as a kid.  Dad and I had this on VHS for years and years before we lost it.  I share it in this particular thread because Tully doing the "POOR MAGNUM! POOR MAGNUM!" thing is such a great example of why you despise this dude before he even hits a guy who suffered a career-ending and catastrophic injury.

I just watched some of his matches on PPV and Sat night shows. He just had a way about him that made you hate him for taking so much punishment but still keep going.  He was never destined to be a Babyface.   He was too good at the heel antics.

Feel free to toss this one out there the next time your buddy complains that "faces don't act like faces" anymore.  There was no bigger face than Dusty Rhodes and look what he did to Blanchard there.

True, BUT... that's what made the angle even more effective. Everyone knew that Magnum was legitimately injured in his car accident and was never even supposed to walk again. It would be like if an Attitude Era heel knocked Droz out of his wheelchair.

No doubt, that's an extreme circumstance.  I'm just tired of folks today acting like faces cannot show an edge ever.  It's beyond tiresome.

The flip side of that is that "the heels never act like true heels." Except for The Miz and Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho calling people stupid idiots, none of the WWE's current heels are really heelish.

Rollins was before his injury.  Actually he still behaves like one, but the fans don't care.

Rollins and Owens are 100% heels and they're glorious because of it.

It seems like now more than ever* people are into personalities and not alignments.  Meaning they don't care how big a heel a guy like KO or Rollins is.  They support the guy/the personality above all.  The problem is that it seems like WWE is slow to recognize and/or accept this and keep trying to force people to boo their heels and cheer their faces.

*The Monday Night War had this as well with the nWo/Austin especially.

Best recent example is New Day.  They were faces long before WWE accepted it.  The arena popped for them and there was a legitimate electricity in the building when they showed up.  The problem was for a long time they were then forced to seek cheap heat and that kind of just neutered the crowd.  Once they stopped doing that they still engaged in some heelish behavior, but fans love them anyway.

FUN FACT: Tully Blanchard's ex-wife is now married to Magnum TA. She's also the mother of Blanchard's 4 children, one of whom is Tessa Blanchard, who's now in NXT.

There's a reason we blame Tully Blanchard for any bad things that happen on The A1 Podcast
