Iron Fist (Netflix)
« on: March 12, 2017, 06:12:38 PM »
Anyone see it yet?  I'd like to hear a review from the people I know aren't tremendously biased one way or another.  ;)

Reviews have torn it apart, but it's hard to seperate the "missed a chance at casting an asian" sour grapes, the "I don't like Iron Fist and wish this was never shot" types, and the critics that are genuinely trying to look at it based on it's own merits.

Ah.

Must be early viewings for reviewers then.

This is one character where it actually makes a lot of sense to do a race switch from the original. Casting an Asian guy to play Iron Fist seems far less offensive to the source material than say a black Heimdall or a black Johnny Storm. I am FAR from a whiny liberal and I certainly don't believe in shoving diversity down people's throats, but I've always thought it was a little silly to have a white guy as Marvel's greatest martial artist.

Mind you, I have never and will never read an Iron Fist comic book, so I have no attachment to the character whatsoever. I can see how fans of his may wet their beds over changing his race; hell, I was pissed when X-Men came out and they cast a 6'2 Aussie to play Wolverine.

Many of the reviews I've read have said that the fight scenes are bad and the guy they cast is shitty at play fighting. They should have cast Daniel Wu, that guy can tear up a choreographed fight scene (I just started watching Into the Badlands, he is amazing!)

I DO have an attachment to the character, reading virtually everything he's been in ever (Since the pre Claremont era and stories from black and white Deadly Hands of Kung Fu).

But the comics are the comic and TV is TV.  I can live with changes.
The thing is, back when he was made they already had Shang Chi.

Maybe the problem isn't Danny's race, but that they chose the wrong horse.

P.S.   And it just came to my attention this is not only a common argument, but ALSO considered racist because it implies "all asians are interchangable".

*Whistles*  There really is no such thing as agreeing to disagee with social issues, is there. Everythings black or white with them  (Or is that racist, too?  Red or Green then?)

I think the only reason I will watch this is for The Defenders.  I am behind on my comic book knowledge.  I would like to know the reason they cast a white guy over an Asian.  It''s hard to justify it in today's culture.

After the backlash against Xmen's costumes, or silent Deadpool in Wolverine:  Origins, or black Johnny Storm, or black Heimdel, they finally have an ip literally two people care about tinkering with.

So yeah, it's a mystery.  :)

And they had an actor ready and willing to play the role, too.  All I can figure is the Game of Thrones guy was owed a favor, and demanded the part (Maybe because he's that second fan?)

Anyone here ever see The Last Dragon? 1985 movie - Think it may have been inspired by Iron Fist?

Did I see Last Dragon?  Sho'nuff!

Sho'nuff's a legend.  :)

But as to whether it was inspired by Iron Fist..  Not sure how popular Iron Fist was back then tbh, or what inspired it (It did come out at the end of the 70's, with a ton of source material to draw from, which I'm far from an expert on.)

On the show, I hear the lead drags it down.  How are you liking Finn?

I'm on episode 10.

I like it enough to keep binge watching, but it's probably the least interesting of the Netflix marvel universe shows.

I didn't like the second half of Luke Cage, but the story telling and characters were written and directed to be far more interesting and cinematic.

Still enjoying it.

From various clips and what not, the supporting cast looks pretty strong.

Colleen Wing could have been the star herself.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't throw someone with a controlling interest in your company out, can you?

Heard the board tried to do exactly this, and I thought Danny has a 51% interest (Which should mean he can't be bought out if he refuses to sell..)

I'm sure in the Real World, it's a messy, complicated process that winds up in a boring court battle, but I can't imagine that it's something that can't ever happen.

The thing is, Danny isn't even an administrator.  His position was always honorary in regards to his 51% majority plus his lawyer's demands.

Of course, I haven't actually seen it for myself, but it does sound like they voted Ward, Joy, and Danny out.

Which maybe can be done to Joy and Ward, but doesn't make sense for Rand..  (All he'd have to do is go to the news...  again.

Assuming he's not knowledgeable enough or cut throat enough to go just fire the board members.)

I thought it was as good as any of the other netflix series

No Stan Lee, was he in the others? I can't remember

the only thing that bugged me was the same as DD2, the insistence on not killing is pretty stupid

I don't believe Stan was in DD2.  The nurse is basically Netflix Stan Lee.

And have you ever seen Samurai Jack?  A "final season" is running now, and like most cartoons, they have a "no kill" hero.  Which is why he usually fights robots.

So in the second episode, they have him taking on about six tiny assassins, that he assumes  aire more robots..  right up until he cuts a girls throat and spills a ton of blood.

Cue look of shock and astonishment from the hero.

I guess the writer/creator Genndy figures most fans who want to see it end have probably grown up now.  :)

Here it is:

Pretty brilliant subversion of that rule if you ask me.  (And lord, that's more blood then Daredevil had.  We've come a long way on censorship..)

Come to think of it, Morgan just broke his no kill policy on Walking Dead.

So that's twice in two weeks.  Maybe that's going to be a thing? Codes against killing getting broken?

I am 6 episodes in, and it's good enough to keep my interest but just barely. I like it better than Jessica Jones so far, but I'd put it below DD and Luke Cage in terms of overall quality. A lot of the fight scenes are slow and awkward, and look more like dancing than fighting. There is a scene where Danny picks up a pair of nunchaku to show off his "skill" to Colleen, and it is so fucking cringey. Looks like he practiced for about 10 minutes before they shot it and then moved on to the next shitty fight scene.

I hope there is a payoff of some sort later in the season, because if it keeps going at this pace I think I will end up regretting the time I spent watching like I did with Jessica Jones.
