There's only two games left in the MLS playoffs. Timbers/Real Salt Lake tonight and the final on Dec 7. It's been a wild ride.
Kansas City finished a point behind New York in the regular season, just losing out on the Supporters Shield.
First round had us against New England. First game didn't go our way and we lost 1-2. The second game was here. Normal time ended with us up 2-1, so off to extra time where we scored to win it 4-3. Absolutely crazy night that was.
Second round saw us facing Houston, the team that had eliminated us from the playoffs the last two years. So there was a lot of dread heading into the series. The first leg a real bore. Both teams came in exhausted, as it was KC's sixth game in three weeks and Houston's seventh game in the same period. Sporting had also come in with the game plan of not letting Houston get a lead that we would have to overcome again. Final score was 0-0.
The second leg was two weeks later because of the international break. Houston were without Will Bruin and Ricardo Clark due to injuries, which was a big blow to them. At kickoff, it was a brisk 18 degrees out(nearly -8 to the rest of the world). Pre-game show was awesome and had an appearance from Tech N9ne that had all the white people going nuts.
The game starts and it quickly becomes apparent that it's going to be a fast paced affair...FUCK! Houston scores in the 3rd minute. No matter, there's still 87 minutes to recover and we don't look out on our feet at all. With our composure kept, 11 minutes later CJ Sapong scored to level it up 1-1! KC had a scare a minute or two before the end of the first half when CJ fell and hyper-extended his elbow. Thankfully he was able to continue.
Second half starts and it's more of the same. Pretty even from both teams with an ever so slight edge to KC's offense. 63rd minute, Benny Feilhaber makes a run with the ball. Chips it to Dom Dwyer, who is facing pressure in the box.
GOAL!!! Sporting is up 2-1!!!
Later in the game, Houston picks up the pressure and forces Jimmy Nielsen to make some saves. But it's all for naught as the final whistle blows.
Sporting will host the final game on Dec 7.
