I think the Lucas example fall under the fair use act

But seriously dude, I don't like to tell people in this thread that they're wrong to be annoyed about stuff, but this happened 25 years ago. Are you looking for stuff to be pissed at?

It's more irritation at Disney practices in general, and the excuse that they HAVE to indiscriminately enforce their rights, even though there's other companies that choose not to enforce them, for whatever reason.

Back in my college days, we were all warned when making our webpages to stear clear of anything Disney related.  I get they have s right to enforce their ip and all, I just don't like the "They must do it" excuse.

When you're standing in line at the bank or the grocery store, and it's moving slowly, and the person behind you starts making passive-aggressive comments about how long we all have to wait because there's only one register open. Just loud enough so we can all hear them.

That's not really an excuse though is it?  I mean that's what the law says, right?  I mean just because others (George Lucas if you say so) aren't as good at it or worried about it, that's not really Disney's problem.

I had never thought about the example Chus gave, but it's a good one.  An inappropriately run daycare could certainly make Disney's brand look bad.

political shit on fb.

specifically the things i like to call traps.

example:

video of police officer apparently shooting a guy who puts down his rifle.  cop is advancing with weapon drawn, says put the gun down.  you see another officer come from behind the suspect around a corner.  and then as the suspect is putting the rifle on the ground, the cop behind him yells GUN and they shoot the suspect.

now, the video is grainy, but if you look closely, you can see that as the suspect falls he has a gun in his right hand.

the associated message with the video says to watch the video before reading the rest of the "article" because they want you to be surprised that the cops acted correctly.  and of course that's what the article does.  it points all this out and then goes on to say that mr and mrs public and the media need to learn that cops are able to see shit like this in the small window of time that it happens.

the problem i have is that as far as i know, no one has made a big deal about the cops in this particular video acting incorrectly.  so what is the point to show this?

its to trap you into thinking that cops are getting a bad wrap because of this video and other things when in actually i dont think anyone has ever shown this video on the news stating that.

what it also fails to point out is that is that its the cop that is behind the suspect who has the clear view of the suspect (btw, a black guy) pulling the handgun from behind his back, who yells GUN.  an angle we don't have.

the other thing it fails to bring up is the fact that the video is grainy.  if you were seeing this in real life you would probably see the gun.  especially if you were one of the two cops (using their  angle and not from the left of the  suepect)...and  really especially if you were the cop behind the  suspect who actually yelled out GUN.

Let me ask you something.  Lets say your daughter hits high school age, and she's seeing some boy you don't much care for..  He's a senior, and she's a junior/sophomore.  He turns 18.  Age of consent is 18.  No Romeo and Juliet laws.

You find evidence they've had relations.  Do you turn him in?

I've always had an interest in influential people, whether it's religious leaders, cult leaders, political leaders and the like, but one thing that's almost impossible to find out about really annoys me:

Basically, an explanation/boiling down of the "it" factor.  Take David Koresh:  What made him so special?  I'm sure there's many, many people who tried to get people to follow them, and failed at it.  But for some reason, he managed to attract a substantial following..  He probably did everything all the failed wanna be's did, but for some reason he succeeded.  Why?

Or look at Muhammed.  Becomes known as a great prophet, and unites the muslim world..  So, why did they follow him, out of all the other people out there?  It's not just that he attracted the attention of joe average muslim..  He'd have to convert/enlist influential, powerful people, too.  And powerful people usually have huge ego's, and tend to be pretty dismissive of anyone who threatens their power...  Yet, they followed him.  Why?

What, exactly, is it that separates people who attract large followings, from everyone else?

You won't find a real answer in history books, or anywhere else..  All they'll say is the facts of their success, without really boiling down what made them special.

The fact you need a license for salt water fishing is pretty damned annoying.

It wasn't that way for years, and then in 2009 they decide to sign into law that anyone over the age of 16 needs a permit.  Which is stupid..  It's the ocean!  They're not stocking it with more fish for us.

What's next, requiring a permit for walking in public parks?

Are you taking animals that you've trapped and/or killed out of the public park with you when you leave?

A permit exists for public park trapping?

Why should you pay for the privilege taking fish out of the ocean?  If they want to protect sea life from recreational fishers, god knows why, then make it a ban.

Otherwise, it's just a money grab.

licenses are there so that fisheries managers can get an idea of how many people are out there fishing, how many fish they are harvesting, what types of fish they are taking, etc.

However, this data is probably useless and unreliable since most people probably don't even bother getting one, or following any of the regulations.

You sound like one of those selfish pricks who will say "somebody should have done something to maintain the fish populations!" 30 years from now when you can't catch anything.  I understand that you're a libertarian freedom lover, but please take a few moments every now and then to think about how you personally benefit from the social framework in which you live.  Enjoy having clean air, fresh water, groceries free from E. Coli, protected parks and oceans relatively free from toxic waste?  Society and government regulations provide those things for you.  Still think you're a macho self-sufficient individual who don't need no stinkin' laws or rules?  Go build yourself a log cabin in Alaska and live off of berries and lichen.

Dude, you're making me sound like Zeb Colter ^_^;

Ok, setting aside the political arguments, how much of an impact could recreational fisher people really have on stocks?  Old folks killing time, kids having fun with their friends, that sort of thing...

For commercial fishing on a large scale, I can see why they'd want to protect the stocks...  McDonalds DID fish a species into extinction..

Familiarize yourself with the concept of the Tragedy of the Commons.

One individual being an asshole is insignificant.  Millions of assholes acting in concert can be devastating.

By the way, are you releasing your catches or keeping them?

they are unreliable because they are based on fishing stories.

I'm familiar with it.  The ocean's a pretty large common's, though.

I still have a hard time believing recreational fishermen could have that large of an impact..  How many people do you think actually fish for sport, here on our continent?  How many fish each do they draw in?  How often do they fish?

Personally, I've never caught more then about 10 in a day (Only In lake fishing,  which I did keep and did have a license for, but just for arguments sake lets stick with the ocean)..  Even if a few thousand other people drew in 10 each, that's still a drop in the bucket compared to what one or two commercial fishing boats take in a day.  And unlike commercial fishers, sport fishermen don't do this every day, usually.. If that's all it took we'd have fished the sea dried of sea life long ago..

Irl Polarizing talk.  Usually religion or politics, of course.  Like Jaybird and Dylan used to do online, and most of stayed as stayed as far away from participating in as possible.  :p

I usually work the polls, and of course it's impossible "not" to get someone in your face about political views..  I learned to just let them talk and move on.

This can kind of get annoying in the opposite direction though.  Friend of mine's a fiscal conservative, and social liberal, and jokes all the time that he should be a registered Republican.  But, when he admitted he voted Democrat "because poor" and I cracked light hearted joke (Not even remotely criticising him), he got all "Don't want to talk about it!" snappy.

Banner ads.

Or more specifically, the people who click on the damned things (Who I'd punch in the nose through their computer if I could...  ^_^; ).  Someone has to do it, right?  Otherwise, they wouldn't be all over the place and require constant use of updated ad blocking software.
