Downloaded an updated version of drivers for my hp printer.  To access web printers, it requires you to sign on to a web service, that you need to register for.

Why do I need to give my name, phone number, address, and other personal information just to access a network printer? 

Because this company sells your information to third parties like every other morally bankrupt company out there? 

I have a thing where I put in a  made up name whenever some trivial thing asks for it, just so when a magazine I never subscribed to is addressed to, say, "rumpelstiltskin", I'll know who sold me out.

But when you meet somebody at the water cooler, you generally feel somebody out before you start discussing how "Mockingjay" ended. You don't just dive right in.

Posting on social media is the equivalent of standing at the water cooler and yelling out plot points to anyone within the sound of your voice.

In social media, I agree, but I've many times stumbled onto reviews or basic info pages that basically ruin the entire story, without spoiler warnings.

Reading for fun is one big annoyance.

I have weak eyes, so a print book will often have fonts too small, even when using glasses.  And it's impossible finding the ideal lighting conditions.

Reading on a tablet is even worse.  For some reason this never bothers me when browsing web sites or email, but if I'm just trying to read an e-book, I'll keep fiddling with the font sizes and color schemes.  At night or in a poorly lit room, for example, you can forget about a white background with black print.  Far too bright.  So I'll try using a black background with colored font, and the fonts will always be too bright or not bright enough.  And I'll keep waffling between larger fonts that feel too large, or smaller fonts that seem too small...

I agree that it's my responsibility, to an extent. I stay out of the Homeland, Gotham, and Walking Dead threads on here until I've had a chance to see the latest episode. But the mere fact that we even have clearly demarcated threads for TV show discussion underscores my point. Most people, both here and on social media, appear to recognize that there's a responsibility on both sides. Quite apart from that, if you really want to talk to someone about TV show spoilers on social media, it's trivially easy to do it privately. Therefore, anyone who publicly posts TV show spoilers on social media is, almost by definition, a self-absorbed twat. And they deserve all the shame, scorn, and ridicule they have coming to them.

I'm guilty of it, too.  A guy got me into a show, talked about how awesome it was all the time, but when I casually bring up a plot point he's like "Thanks for the spoiler!"

Turns out he never made it past season 1.  I started off three seasons behind, and just assumed he kept up the way he raved about it...

I am a bit of a grammar nazi myself, because bad grammar is the visual equivalent of nails on a blackboard, so I'm with you. My grammar may not be perfect but I remembered what I learned in grade school.

while on the grammar subject, are "try to" and "try and" now interchangable? i always thought "try to" was the proper way, but more and more i keep hearing and seeing phrases like "i'm going to try and get there by 4pm."
