This thread is like a train wreck wrapped in a grease fire yet I can't look away.

Because it's all RELATABLE, dood. It's all in your head anyway - some folks just try to pretend it's not.

Ehn, the only stuff I can relate to is traffic stuff like people not using their directionals or for some reason forgetting how to drive in snowy or icy conditions. I have no idea how people in big cities with long commutes do it. I would road rage through all of New York.

Underpaying for doggie treats and overpaying for gas balances out on my bullshit karma meter.

Underpaying for doggie treats isn't really the point though.

Being made to choose between feeling dishonest, or feeling like you're being taken advantage of, is.

I mean, people are going to have differing opinions, but generally someone that accepts, say, a 50 dollar bill in change when he paid with a 20 would be looked down upon as a piece of shit.

Me personally, I say try and be somewhat honest and fair, but you really can't blame someone that takes advantage of someone elses mistake either..

Stuff like this seems to happen to me at least once every year.  The biggest examples i can think of:

-bought new handlebars for my mountain bike after a painful crash.  the bill from the bike shop was only $15 for labour, I had to point out to the clerk that I should have been charged for the new part as well.  Could have walked away with $50 more in my bank account if i had just kept my mouth shut.

-waitress at local pub forgot to charge me for a pitcher of beer when I was out with some buddies on wing night.  I pointed it out to her and she was so embarrassed/thankful that she gave me $5 off the pitcher.

-went to buy a propane tank for my new barbecue at the gas station.  they have a program where you trade in your empty tanks and get a discount on a filled one, but being my first time purchasing a tank i should have been charged for both the tank, AND the propane.  but i dealt with 2 different employees, and the one who rung me through only charged me for the refill price.  What should have cost me $60-something was only like $22.  I didn't speak up for this one, cuz i'm not too concerned about the financial well-being of a big corporate gas station.

those are the biggest ones, but there have been others of amounts < $5 that I've not taken advantage of, so overall i'm still on the side of good.

On the Duke rape hoax.

This kind of thing both annoys and fascinates me.

Quote
Brooklyn college history professor K.C. Johnson’s blog Durham in Wonderland is the most detailed record of the Duke Rape hoax, written as events unfolded and summarized afterwards. If you’re unfamiliar, the short of it is a district attorney named Mike Nifong who was seeking reelection exploited the racial tension in Durham to win the black vote and his reelection, and pushed ahead with the prosecution of a rape accusation that evidence did not support. The end result was Nifong’s disbarment and criminal conviction along with the Attorney General of North Carolina declaring the accused Duke Lacrosse players innocent of the charges against them (not not guilty, but actually innocent).
Some of the ethical violations by Nifong and the Durham police department were inexcusable. The alleged rape was said to have occurred at a party thrown by the Duke lacrosse team, at which both the accuser and nearly all of the lacrosse team were present. The line-ups used by Durham police featured only Duke lacrosse players, eliminating any realistic chance of a false positive when the accuser was asked to identify the particular Duke lacrosse players involved. Perhaps worse (certainly so in the eyes of the North Carolina State Bar) Nifong made pubic statements to the media that he had DNA evidence placing the specific lacrosse players accused at the scene of the crime, which not only was an outright lie, but Nifong delayed releasing the full results of the DNA testing performed by the Durham police that would have helped exonerate the defendants.
When Nifong asked the state attorney general’s office and the Administrative Office of the Courts to pay his legal fees and help defend him against the civil suit that followed, both offices refused on the grounds that Nifong’s actions involved “fraud, corruption (and) malice.”

So, the real story is a DA basically tried to bury the Duke boys to further his career, the police were complicit, Feminist groups jumped on it to further their agenda and refused to back down even after they were found innocent...
This is why I said I could relate to BobbyR, because I often look for information I find annoying..  But, I can't help it, because I find the dynamics of how history always repeats itself so compelling..  It's happening right now in Connecticut, with the allegations that four police officers violated the rights of Latino/Hispanic citizens.  Allegations get made, certain people in positions of power and influence drive those allegations to further their careers, the general public eats it up and goes through a period of real or faux outrage.  And in the end, whether the allegations end up being true or not, the public moves onto the next scandal.
This is why I have no faith in a system that works anymore..  If, for example, politicians will lie to become elected president, why do we, as the public, give them our trust, knowing full well that we're being lied to?  Because it's more important for us to be on the winning team, even if the person on our team is as bad as the guy on the opposing team...?  Do we simply not care about things like ethics or integrity, get off on playing our role in the drama, and only care about being the winners by hook or by crook, or something?

I hate it when you pull a slice of pizza off the pie, and the cheese plops down in a lump, leaving you with nothing but sauced bread. Say what you will about Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, Dominos, etc, but they never seem to have this problem.

Hey, I like Pizza Hut.

And you're right.

I think it depends on the cheese they use, as well as how long they cook it..  There's this one place in town that has pizza as good as the famous Modern Pizza place in New Haven, CT, and they claim their secret is using a higher grade of cheese.  It doesn't get all milky and runny like most other places, and tastes fantastic..

I'm seeing more of these Apple netbooks with these power cords that cover the entire wall outlet.  It's an obnoxious design, given the limited outlet access at most coffee shops.

Rats, tattletails, squeelers, narcs, or basically people who don't know how to mind their own business and report someone to the police, boss at work, or other authority figure for something that doesn't concern them.

Happens all the time.  Someone brags about smoking weed, for example, and some asshole decides to report them.  (No, this isn't something that ever happened to me or mine, but it does happen.)  Or maybe you stumble onto a facebook page, gossip about it to the wrong person, and get someone fired...

My creedo:  See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.  Never name names, never mess with someone that didn't mess with me first..  That doesn't mean I wouldn't cooperate with the law over a serious crime, but a lot of the stuff people get turned in for is just petty stuff, and I prefer minding my own business if it isn't over something serious..

Wish more people thought this way.

A teacher in my town got busted because some nosy neighbors reported him, for one.

First class teacher and decent human being, but oh my gods he may be smoking weed with his friends, get him out of town!

This show that came on after Smackdown, American Experience, about Bill Clinton is a pretty big disappointment...

Instead of an objective biography, it's pretty much a Clinton boosting piece that's looking at everything through rose colored glasses..  Even cheating on his wife with Monica is basically treated like some romantic story, with excuses like "She gave him what he needed.  He just needed to be loved." and other similar tripe..

I'd feel the same way about a piece on, say, Reagan, or anybody..  If I'm seeing a bio, I want facts, not propaganda.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/highschool-prep-rally/maryland-swim-team-retroactively-loses-county-title-because-153508295.html

Quote
That's right, improper shaving. Not shaving points mind you, but shaving of body hair. And, as it turns out, if the unnamed player implicated had only shaved a couple hours earlier, she and her teammates would still have their county title.
As reported by a number of Maryland news outlets, the Baltimore Sun and Annapolis Capital among them, the Broadneck (Md.) High girls swimming squad lost its Anne Arundel County title after it was determined that one of the team's swimmers shaved on-site just before the start of the event. National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rules for swimming, diving and water polo stipulate that athletes can not shave before, during or after a meet once a team is on-site.
The reason why the NFHS institutes a no shaving on-site policy is to protect the swimmers themselves from possible blood transmission or, in general, doing full body shaves in high school locker rooms, which would maximize the possibility of unsafe practices like sharing razors. Still, the rule can seem quite a bit over the top when one considers generally acceptable practices for other sports; after all, no one is telling football or basketball players that they can't shave after a game or practice.
Because of the violation, Broadneck lost all points won by the swimmer implicated, dropping the Bruins from first to third place in the final standings. Severna Park (Md.) High was later declared the county champion after Broadneck's lost points were redistributed.
Meanwhile, the Annapolis Capital reported that Broadneck swimming coach Colleen Winans was suspended for the Class 4A-3A Regional Championships which were held on Saturday because of her swimmer's violation. A release from the Anne Arundel School District cited the failure of Winans' squad to abide by "the rules of the game and promote ethical relationships among coaches and players," as the reason for the discipline taken against Winans, which included the one-meet ban.
The Broadneck boys and girls varsity swimming teams — BroadneckAthletics.org height=233The Broadneck boys and girls varsity swimming teams — BroadneckAthletics.org
As Swimming World Magazine general manager Jason Marsteller noted in an email with Prep Rally, it's the retroactive aspect of Broadneck's punishment that may be most bizarre.
"I'm not sure I've seen much of this type of punishment within the sport," Marsteller wrote in an email. "About the only place retroactive punishments happen is in the case  of positive doping tests."
Certainly doping tests and shaving seem a world apart, even if both might provide competitive advantages (doping for obvious reasons, and shaving to reduce drag for competitive swimmers).

All I can think about is:
Who ratted them out?  I mean, who just sits there and watches a girl shave, than reports them later?
It's a stupid rule..  Yeah, hygiene is an issue, but the consequences for this "violation" seem blown out of proportion.

So I'm at work, and I want to make the first pot of coffee. Some helpful person cleaned the pots last night and left them full - ok, let me dump it in the sink. As soon as this woman finishes rinsing out her water bottle for the 88th time. It's a fucking water bottle, it doesn't need an ounce of soap to clean!!!!!!!

I guess not being cool about stuff, just isn't cool.  ^_^;

Or something.

And so as not to leave this thread without a rant, I think I need to get new friends..  My friend from middle school basically told his son not to watch any more My Little Pony.. Forbade it.

Than he chewed me out for telling him once people get past their school days, things like reps don't matter, and nobody cares what you watch.  It's like one big world of peace and love in adult-ville, where everyone is tolerant and understanding of everyone else.

And my friend got pissed over it!

I mean, sure, there's some crumbs that can be petty or shallow, but that's a minority!  Anybody with even a little intelligence doesn't judge other people...  I know I don't, and I know no one here on A1 does either.  So let the kid watch his show and teach him how to grow a thicker skin, and pick better friends, instead of trying to please a bunch of school kiddies...
