here's a stupid one. The word decimated.  Reporter said this morning a fire decimated a family when obviously he meant devestated. Unless 10% of the family was killed, then he was right
 
It could be argued the meaning of the word has evoloved - but fuck that noise

Decimate also means: to destroy a great number or proportion of: The population was decimated by a plague.
 
So even if the fire got 3/4 of them it would still work. But if they all died, then it's used incorrectly.

I don't think so - but the definition I have always heard to be correct is to reduce by a tenth - which I see dictionary.com calls obsolete. Liek I said, maybe it's an evolution of the word - but I don't find that definition satisfactory. I mean, just look at the word! Decimate - it's kinda obvious.

I've typically heard the term used the way it is in the first definition provided.  I never even thought about or knew its ties to the third definition.

It used to be used strictly in a military context, where a Roman army that was defeated would have every tenth man killed by its men. I suppose if you get annoyed by it no longer meaning reducing by a tenth, you should also be annoyed that the meaning has moved strictly from Roman Army punishment to not necessarily being a punishment at all. Language moves.

Price gouging annoys me...

Especially common with technology, like Apple products ..  You can buy most of the tech used any given Ibook, for example, for a fraction of what they charge for those things...

And don't get me started on the price of phones.  They're selling FLIP PHONES for 300 dollars at Best Buy.  I know you'll get them for a lot less when you sign a contract, but that's the point..  You shouldn't have to get locked into a stupid contract to get the deal on a flip phone.

Tech prices are artificially inflated, imo, largely because of people that HAVE to keep up with the Joneses...  Sure, we all want to own cool stuff, but getting ripped off ain't cool.  (Rant brought to you from my nice affordable IBM laptop..)

Close minded, polarized, uber-competitive internet debaters annoy me...

Taking religion vs science as an example, I, personally, would like having a conversation about creationism vs evolution, or the merits and pitfalls of religious faith, for the sheer joy of discussing the subject, without dealing with all the emotional baggage people take into them.

Same for politics, discussions on race, sexual orientation, or any other "hot button" topic.. 

And it IS an internet thing..  Having a "debate" in real life is usually less shouting at each other, and more a point, counter point, counter counter point, nothing to lose by being wrong except learning something new kind of thing.  The point isn't winning or losing the debate, or impressing your friends, the point is just having fun talking about things.  We're all friends, after all...

I guess there's no friends on the internet, though...

Another pet peeve:

Watching the Olympics now, and they mentioned how when cell phones came into use, coaches were using them to communicate with players, so they had to ban them.

Sounds logical, sure, but I'm against blanket bans on principle..  There's plenty of good, necessary uses for a cell phone too (Say, what if a family member absolutely needed to get in touch, because of an emergency..  Pretty sure a coach would want to be informed his wife or child is hospitalized, even during an Olympic event..)

That's pretty much true of anything..  Everything and anything can be abused.  Yet, banning anything and everything can also cause problems...

Which is why "case by case" basis should be standard, instead of blanket actions because of what "some" do...  IMO..

I realize this is ancient now, but it still kind of annoys me how a lot of posters piled on him..  I mean, the way I saw it, he was just trying to pre-empt any future drama with his post, and he almost got lynched... 

Almost got an "assimilate or die" vibe..
