I'd say that he was up until Hogan and Bischoff came along and tried to steal all the spotlight along with the additions of Hardy and RVD. Tenay and Tazz always mention he was the longest reigning world title holder when he is onscreen. Plus he has one of the best entrances as far as pyrotechnics is concerned. Is referred to as "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, puts on great matches no matter who he's facing, is the leader of Fortune and always gets the biggest pop from the crowd. So opinions may vary.
^ I was going to say something like this.
late 2009 PPV Main Events
No Surrender - A.J. Styles defeated Kurt Angle (c), Matt Morgan, Sting, Hernandez
Bound For Golory (TNA's Wrestlemania) - A.J. Styles (c) defeated Sting
Turning Point - A.J. Styles (c) defeated Daniels and Samoa Joe
Final Resolution - A.J. Styles (c) defeated Daniels
Genesis 2010 - A.J. Styles (c) defeated Kurt Angle
I think a fair argument can be made that AJ took a back seat once Bischoff, Hogan, RVD, Hardy, et all came in. But in late 2009 he clearly was being pushed as a top guy
