The Best Console Ever?
« on: August 23, 2011, 04:03:14 PM »
Too many to do a poll post. Write in. I think I've done this before, or we have here at least.

I'm sure NES will be the runaway winner, but let's approach it from two angles:

1. Best considering history, your life experience with the console, etc.

2. Best straight up, i.e. you can only own one console from history, knowing what you know now, with all the game libraries as they are, what do you pick?

My answers:

1. This one is actually really, really hard. The NES was the one that started it all. The Genesis was the first system I played adult type games on. I would probably say that my nostalgia pick is the Sega Saturn. The reason is simple, this is the system I owned during my (community) college years, and it's the one I played on the most with all my friends. The 3D0 almost gets the nod based solely on The Need For Speed, the first version and the best by far because you could steer your friends into oncoming traffic and make them cause 10 car pileups.

2. XBOX 360. And I don't even have XBOX Live. The games are just that good.

Also, a note, yes you can include the Wii's TG16, NES libraries when you consider them. You can consider the SNES Mario Bros. game with all three Mario Bros. games on it.

SNES.  Took everything from the NES era and made it better, had AAA titles from a big variety of genres, a decent sized library, and probably the best RPG library of any system.

PS2 is a close tie, though.

I had "Commodore 64" down and was about to hit Post when I re-read the thread title.

So, XBox 360.  Hands down.  Can't even look at PS2 or Wii games anymore without getting cross-eyed, so high def (720p+) graphics are a major point for me.  That, and the lack of game saves takes a good portion of the field out in my eyes.

PS3 has nearly the same third party library, plus better exclusives.

"Better exclusives" being a matter of opinion, in my book.  PS3's matchmaking still sucks from what I gather, and I don't think I have to remind anyone of the rampant hacking that has marred a lot of the PS3's multiplayer offerings.  That, and Kinect is about this far from delivering a completely revolutionary gaming experience.

The PS2 had it all. I'd have to pick that... and I think that probably when it's all said and done, the PS3 can surpass it.

Not really.

I mean, yeah, technically someone can think Fable is > Uncharted 2, Resistance 2, God of War 3, or Killzone 3, but they probably watch TNA and think RC Cola is just as good a Coke..

this is very tough. so many consoles are good for so many reasons.

NES gets a nostalgia pop, and props for kicking off the mainstream video game culture.

if i could go back in time, i would convince my younger self to get an SNES instead of Genesis.  My brother and I still got a ton of use out of the SEGA, but Sonic and Altered Beast aren't enough to make up for a lack of Mario kart, Starfox, Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger.  Not to mention, 6-button controller > 3-button.

As amazing as PlayStation was, it still had limitations (long load times, major slowdown with multiplayer games, 2 controller ports).  But if I had to pick just one from that generation, it would be PS.  N64 provided a lot of good times with groups of friends in Mario Party, Smash Bros. and Goldeneye, but its offering of single player games was pretty shit.

I would take XBox over PS2.  The controller was better, the system was easier to mod, and the graphics were better.  neither system had any exclusives that sway me either way.  Gran Turismo is boring, and Halo games suck my balls.

I'm not familiar enough with the current gen to have an opinion, other than i think the Wii is shit.  But that's more due my preference in games than any specific shortcomings of the system.

so for ME, super best ever console is XBOX, I guess?  I fully expected to declare PS as my #1 when I started this post, but upon reflection, I have to take the box.  bringing console games to the internet, putting in a dedicated hard drive, 4 controller ports, XBOX is the system that the competition tried to emulate in this current gen.  My opinion may also be slightly biased, because the XBOX that I mainly used was modded and augmented with a 150 GB hard drive.  But I have a shitload of great gaming memories from that system, including single-, 2- and 4-player games.  most of my great gaming memories from PS are single player games, and all of my great gaming memories from N64 are 4-player games.

XBOX did it all, and did it best (up to that point)

1. NES. If it wasn't for the NES there would be no video game market. Nintendo is directly responsible for all their success and for Sony creating PlayStation. And Sony's success was the reason Microsoft entered the console war. All praise The Big N.

2. I'm tempted to say Wii with all the classics, but I'm gonna go with the 360. I still like the Wii and look forward to Skyward Sword, but I easily play the 360 way, way more.

 "Wigglesticks"

So what are the must own exclusive on the 360?

Firstly, Halo, Gears of War, Left 4 Dead.

Secondly, then there's the games like Bioshock and Mass Effect series where they come out on the 360 first and then show up on the PS3 a year later.

Thirdly, if you really want to start weighing exclusives that heavily you realize Nintendo is gonna steam roll both the 360 and PS3?

"Wigglesticks"

Except there's no sticks.  Your actual movements are translated to the screen.  Hell, with Your Shape: Fitness Evolved, the Kinect can judge your workout form by the angle of your arms and legs.  That kind of acuity is something Wiiglesticks could only dream of replecating.

SNES - Ask any hardcore gamers today, this is where it starts. The only time that casual gamers and hardcore gamers have something to agree on: Super Mario Kart is fuckin' awesome.

PS1 - Deep library of games and all-time classics like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy IX, Silent Hill, Resident Evil 2, Crash Bandicoot, Wipeout, Ridge Racer, and I can go on. The only problem is there's a LOT of crap in its library (remember all the FMV games that clogged up the Sega CD & 3DO? Well, they are on this system).

PS2 - The one to judge by as far as games. Had probably one of the better launch line-ups and STILL has great games on it (Sakura Wars came out in 2010). Madden NFL 12 will be out on this, so it's not going anywhere.

Xbox 360 - I have all three systems in this gen, but I've spent more time on the 360. The online experience is exceptional and the games are more fun to play. Graphically, no it's not as good as the PS3 in some regards.

Nintendo DS - RPG's, RPG's, and oh strategy RPG's and Castlevania games. That's all you need. I know it's a handheld. AND it can play Game Boy Advance games.

And again Microsoft would have never even considered it had it not been for Nintendo. The old A1 is dead so I can't pull the post, but your reaction to the Wii was that it was a shit gimmick and video game players want pretty graphics and to sit down with a controller, not wave Wigglesticks. Now Kinect is close to "a completely revolutionary gaming experience" ? No. The Wii was revolutionary in that YOU were the controller. Kinect is just MORE OF YOU is the controller.

The manuscript narrative was the best part of the game and the TV Drama As Video Game format was unique, but ehn. It had six missions and each one was two hours long. Yay. And you started each mission with shit. Finish a level with the shotgun and lantern? Too bad! Go find another flashlight. It was worth a play, but I had no desire to replay on Nightmare and I don't look forward to a sequel.

Your recall is excellent, but I believe my observations on Wiiglesticks looking cheap still stand.  Right now, I've got Okami and No More Heroes sitting on the shelf gathering dust because I can't handle the downgrade in graphics quality.  Granted, games like Dance Central and Fruit Ninja aren't graphically  at the level of Gears or Reach, they certainly look a hell of a lot better than anything I've played on the Wii, Mario Galaxy II even being taken into account.

As for the controller aspect, Wiiglesticks starts adding-on all sorts of junk just to let you get full control, whether it be a wheel snap-in, the nunchuck or the Motion Plu(g)s attachment...and you're still limited to the buttons on the controllers themselves.  The Kinect just does away with all of this, and with the improved voice recognition updates in the pipeline, it only gets better.

Sure, Nintendo did it first.  It's just that Kinect does it better.

I'm currently working on my Nightmare walkthrough and, honestly, even the upgrades don't help you as much as a good sense of timing and good resource management do.  I'm also finding a lot more manuscript pages, which fill-in some of the side stories going on, as well as getting a completely different look at the complexities of the story that I didn't catch the first go-round.

If I have time, I'm probably even going to get the DLC just to get another taste of the world they created.

Plus, it's really awesomely creepy to stand at the top of a hill, see a gas station or whatever in the beautifully realized wooded landscape, then realize that you're going to have to fight tooth-and-nail just to make it across that short distance through the woods.  The atmosphere of this game is seriously top-notch.

Best console ever: XBox 360, hands down, for all the reasons people have posted. The specs/graphics/power is awesome, the games usually come out first for 360, online/multiplayer isn't even close with how good the 360 does it, KINECT, your credit card doesn't get stolen. All of it.

your credit card doesn't get stolen.

I thought that was one of the things the hackers couldn't get, when Sony had its problems.

Even if some had, it happens with Live too.  Every once in awhile, you hear about someones credit card information getting stolen, and someone running up a bill with it..

Dunno what the best is, but my favorite is still the NES.
