Just started this morning and played all day. Killed a dragon, two giants, three wooly mammoths and sucker punched an elk. I've crossed like a tenth of the map and discovered maybe half of the stuff there. I purposely got lost and found a house with two dead bandits outside it. It wasn't a part of any story I had, but just something that happened somewhere that I probably never would've found. There is so much to do and miles and miles to do it in. I love this game already.

i should have gotten this game instead of arkham asylum.

Meh.  Bioshock Infinite will be the game to get..

I only hope Skyrim doesn't disappoint me as much as all the other piles of crap that get AAA ratings these days....

this game is taking up entirely too much of my time, and I'm only level 17.  I wish they would tweak the carrying capacity nonsense, I keep having to leave $$$$ all over the place (dragon bones and scales)

I acquired a 70 something gift card to Best Buy.  Thinking about picking up Skyrim soon.

Even if it sucks like 99.9% of all modern games I tried (Arkham Asylum and Gears of War among them), I have to blow it on something, so Skyrim seems a good bet..  MvsC3 is tempting though, and I'm not exactly a hardcore fighting game fan.

You'll still be playing Skyrim in 2012.
Marvel Vs. Capcom 3....not likely.

Beating Galactus will probably get old fast.

Allrighty, I'm picking up Skyrim.

I know a guy who claims he put in 109 hours within two weeks.  So over 7 hours a day?  O_o

I don't think I have it in me to go more than 2 or 3, and not every day...

So how do you play, anyways?

It's like every other RPG you've ever played only better. Be warned: there are still bugs in the game, but they're mostly physics gaffs and some are hilarious.

The first thing you need to know is that there is no XP for killing things. You don't get 10 XP for killing a fox, 50 XP for killing an elk and 100 XP for killing a bear, oh fuck let's kill some bears for sweet XP. No, what happens is that you swing a one-handed weapon X number of times and it levels up. Block with a shield X number of times and it levels up. Crouch into stealth mode when an enemy is nearby and if he doesn't see you it levels up. Talk to people and sell things enough times and speech levels up. Level enough of those individual things up and your character gains a level. In other words, don't just kill shit or do quests expecting end of quest XP. Do things. Do everything and find out what you like to do. Then do what you like while you play and gain your levels.

If you're the kind of guy that wants to suit up and kill shit play a Warrior type. They use One handed, Two handed, Heavy Armour, Light Armour, Archery, Shield and Smithing.

If you're more of a magic guy then play a Mage type. They use Restoration, Destruction, Alchemy, Enchanting, Alteration, Conjuration and Illusion magic.

If you'd rather sneak around and steal shit and kill people from the shadows play a Thief. They use Sneaking, Lockpicking, Speechcraft and Pickpocket.

Those aren't set in stone either as there are no archetypes. You can freely do whatever you want as those are just generic guidelines. You can be a lockpicking, dual wielding alchemist if you want. Those are just the eighteen things you can do to level.

Secondly, save often. There is no real death penalty, but you do revert to your last save. There's nothing quite as heartbreaking as losing half a level of progress because of one fucking giant.

Thirdly, in the beginning don't buy anything, just sell. You'll find tons of weapons, armour, potions and food to use. Or if you want just steal things. But if you get caught and arrested you'll pay a fine and lose all your stolen goods.

Fourthly, books worth more than 50 are worth a read. They'll give you a stat up in their respective skills. All other books are flavour text.

Finally, explore. I've played for a week and I'm sitting halfway between 26 and 27. I've done a ton of exploring. And dragon slaying. When I get off work I'll do a couple of quests and then spend an hour just walking in a new direction filling out the map and finding new locations. I've found over two hundred so far just for fast travelling purposes. I've only walked through Falkreath, I still haven't been to Morthal or Windhelm and I've just started Riften.

This game.

Bioshock? Really? I will get Infinite, too, but Infinite will be 10% of the game Skyrim is.

AAA isn't a rating. AAA titles are the games that studios devout the most time and money into. They're the games based on the biggest IPs that'll hopefully make a ton of money to support smaller, newer non-franchise games. They're not necessarily the best games to play, but they'll sell well.

I wish they would tweak the carrying capacity nonsense, I keep having to leave $$$$ all over the place (dragon bones and scales)

The Steed Stone increases your carry weight by 100 pounds and removes the armor movement penalty. Consequently you can mount your horse when you're overencumbered and fast travel that way.

Gears, enh, but Arkham Aslyum was great. Arkham City is amazing. You need to play more current games.

Better than Aslyum?

tbh, I didn't think AA was a bad game, but didn't think it was fantastic either.  Maybe I'm jaded, or maybe my tastes have changed..

To date, the best 360 game I've ever played is Vanquish.  Too bad it's so short.

Arkham City is WAY better than Asylum.

BUT, it only took me a couple days to play through the main story.  And a couple more playing days to finish all but the riddler side story (and any catwoman side stories if there are any).

it is a lot of fun dropping in on unspecting criminals from a 10 story building though.

beat it today, very happy with the game...I made one error along the way that is bothering me for some reason (hastily killed someone I didn't have to, turned out I could have finished the game without doing it).  I will now put it away and get crackin at MW3, Skyward Sword and NBA2K12

im lvl 20 and as far as i know have yet to face a dragon priest or whatever.  i've killed 5 or 6 dragons and have the death/assassin word, fire breath, ice breath, ice form, the one you start with, and the two or three those monks give you for free.  i've been playing almost non-stop since saturday afternoon.

how far from the end am i?
was i not supposed to kill that assassin leader chick?  i took one of their jobs and killed that old orphanage lady, then when i slept, i awoke in some shack in the middle of no where and the assassin tells me to kill one of three people.  once i got control, i fire breathed her and then destroyed her.  then they sent me after the rest of the assassins - and that's where i got that death/word shout thing.
I almost bought this last week from Best Buy because I had a 73 dollar gift card, and walked away empty handed because they somehow gave me an old, used gift card by mistake.  They cleared it up, but for some reason couldn't simply give me a credit on the spot, and had to mail the new card to my address.  So I was out of luck.

But now that I've had time to think it over, that Dark Souls game looks really good..  It got rave reviews, and the Smartvideogamefan podcast couldn't stop talking about it...  They basically claimed the combat system was a lot better, but also raved about it in general...  (The phrase "Best game this generation" kept getting tossed around, and both have played Skyrim).

And I do have a Gamestop gift card for 25 bucks, so I'd only be blowing 35 dollars on it...

The thing is, one of them put in something like 180 hours, so if I get this I'm waiting on Skyrim.  Any insights on how Dark Souls stacks up against Skyrim, or if it's worth getting?

how far from the end am i?

In reverse order:

- The end of the main quest? What was the name of the last main quest you did? You mentioned the three dragonshouts the Greybeards give you. That quest was The Way Of The Voice. Have you done The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller yet? There's 18 parts to the main quest and Jurgen would be 1/3 of the way. If you mean overall you still have to do the Companions quests, the College of Winterhold, the Thieves Guild, the Dark Brotherhood, the Imperial Army / Stormcloaks Rebellion, the Daedric quests and another 100 or so scripted and radiant quests. I still haven't finished them all.

- There's 20 dragon shouts and 60 words altogether. The little dragon head on the map is the location of a Word Wall, but not all the Word Walls are out in the open. The rest of them are locked away in the bottom of a dungeon or quest. I still haven't found them all.

- I think I killed four named dragons and who knows how many regular / Blood / Frost / Elder / Ancient dragons. Dragon priests are in set locations. I found my first one while fighting a dragon near a Word Wall. That was fun. You fight one during the main story and the rest I found were at the end of a dungeon.  I still haven't killed them all.

- If you level every skill to 100 you'll be halfway between 81 and 82.  I still haven't gotten there.
If you kill one of the three victims she'll induct you into the Dark Brotherhood. I killed all three and was told I'm an overachiever. When you killed her you locked yourself out of joining the Dark Brotherhood and are now instead working against them. It won't matter unless you like the achievements / trophies, but you can either go back to an earlier save or start a new person just for those. It's no biggie, but you'll now have random assassins trying to kill you.
cool.  just wanted to make sure it was worth buying (even tho i'll be getting it for ps3 and will have start all over).
they already sent one assassin to kill me
btw, am i the only one that hates horses.  i stole that horse frost, but he's kind of a pita.  it helps a little getting to new places - tho you can fast travel to the closest point and it doesn't really take long to get there - but if he's too close when a fight breaks out, he tries to help (he's died at least 3 times).  he'll run up stairs and shit to chase enemies.

once i was finishing up getting a quest where i needed to go in the back door of a fort and then let in some warriors.  well, dumbass frost starts gallopping around.  i didn't think much of it, till i started getting hit with arrows from the fort - stupid horse wandered too close and initiated combat.  in order to save lydia (my companion who with the other NPCs joined in the fight), i had to get on frost, run him well away from the fight, then i had to go back and up the hill, and come down from above...of course by the time i had gotten there, all the bad guys but one were dead and one of the NPCs were dead.  and after killing everyone in the open, the quest was still open for me to go in the back cave entrance.

also, Lydia is quite funny.  whenever i want to trade with her (have her hold my crap), she says (in an extremely sarcastic tone), "I am sworn to carry your burdens".

anyone do the nettlebane quest?  that was some intense shit.
i climbed up a mountain and came upon this place from the wrong side.  even tho lydia somehow made it up there, she didn't follow me all the way and when i got attacked by four mages, she was no where to be found.  no biggie.  i dispatched them with ease.  SAVED.

suddenly from this hill, giant fireballs start raining down on me.  i booked it.  still no lydia.  i start sneaking up.  i'm doing ok.  then i'm spotted and bam, i start getting nailed again and get killed trying to run for cover.  i still have no idea wtf i'm facing.

so when i start over, i start climbing to go around and come upon a rebellion camp.  lydia shows up.  i talk to a guard and somehow i join the rebellion...oops.

anyway, this camp is higher than the hags (she's some sort of hag with hooves) place.  i end up going back down, and sneaking up the opposite side than the first time i approached.  this time i realize that she's walking around the whole place.  last time i never got close enough to see her.

this time i get really close and i see SOMETHING moving.  she sort of spots me and stops, but i move back down and she starts walking again.  she gets within a few feet and lydia and i just destroy her.  she didn't even get a shot off.  anyway, it was pretty awesome.
i can't recall my ps3 ever crashing on a game.

so far after a day and a half of playing, no crashes on ps3.  it does get choppy after 10 consecutive hours of play.  ;)

there are some differences between the games.  the 360 (i THINK) keeps track of all auto saves (so you can go back) while ps3 only keeps the last three auto saves.  i wish i had known that before i cleared two camps and then lydia disappeared - i wandered down a canyon - just a tiny bit - she followed, then during the second camp, i noticed she was gone.  afterwards, i went in a cave and she didn't appear so somehow she died.  had to go WAY back to when i had saved before fast traveling to the area nearby.  really sucked because this place was kind of hard to get to.

sometimes lydia is a badass.  i attacked a giant in his camp and killed him pretty easily.  then when i was coming down, i noticed a giant and two mammoths.  i attacked the giant and the mammoths came to help.  i ran like hell cause i was low on heal pots.  next thing i notice is lydia is walking backwards fighting them.  i keep running back and she keeps pulling them.  then the giant breaks off and i figured she must be dead, so i ran up and killed the giant.  then i get attacked by wolves, kill them and turn to fight the mammoths and lo and behold there's lydia still zapping them.

she doesn't do well against mages tho.  they fuck her shit up.

As soon as lydia gets damaged enough, she'll stop attracting dudes. The risk with mages is they cast flame or something that continues to damage her while she's bowed over. Poison will lead to the same thing. Also, if you lose Lydia, just go back to the Whiterun house, she'll turn up there (unless deaded).
