Like Suptool said, there's some impressive games on portable media devices and smart phones. I'm thinking we're at a point now where an expensive dedicated portable gaming thing just isn't worth it..
Agreed. Smart phones are replacing a lot of different items: point and shoot digital cameras, camcorders (to a lesser degree), and handheld gaming systems. We are in the age of the app now, and small dedicated devices are being phased out.
There will always be a strong market for larger, higher end units (read: DSLR cameras over a smart phone camera), but for a dedicated higher end handheld gaming unit, that's a stretch.
Unless it's a Nintendo handheld., because they know how to do it right. IMO, Nintendo should drop consoles all together and stick with handhelds..
This is kinda contradictory to what you said above, but I get what you're saying. Nintendo had it right with the N64, then dropped the ball when they went to the Gamecube and then utterly failed with the Wii (don't argue sales numbers. as a pure gaming system, the Wii sucks total ass. Yes, it appeals to families and casual gamers, but "real" gamers are left out.)
I guess what I'm saying is Nintendo *could* do a "real" console correctly if they chose to. But even with the DS/DS Lite and the DSi, those are on the way out as well as they are replaced by phones and iPods.
Dedicated hand held gaming devices are not a strong market now. Phones and iPods are taking over. If Nintendo wants to stick in this game, they need to rededicate themselves to consoles and do them right.
