I heard yesterday on the radio that the injury that took down Manning is a direct result of the bounty-Saints. Would that be the Super Bowl?

It would have to have been, but I kinda doubt this story. Peyton finished that game, then played all of 2010 before missing last season.

Because Peyton finished that game, then played all of 2010 before missing last season. I'm being asked to believe that a single hit he received in 2009 caused an injury that caused him to miss a season that began 18 months later.

I find it hilarious that some people who are furious about bounties in the name of safety are clamoring for two extra regular season games. Bounties are in bad taste, but honestly, let's not pretend they're anything but a carny sideshow act that only enhances the violence in an already violent game.

football is a violent game.  that's a given.
 
but there's a difference between accidentally hurting a guy and purposely hurting a guy.  there's an even bigger difference between accidentally hurting a guy and purposely hurting a guy for money.

You can injure a guy just as easily not trying as you can by trying your best.

Is it? The fact you're giving teams two more games to play at full speed and expose themselves to injuries is going to cause way more injuries than paying a dude for knocking another player out of the game ever will.

intent is the issue.  is your intent to injure someone?  is your intent to injure someone for pay?

yes.  one argument is about paying someone to hurt someone.
 
the other argument is about adding extra games which will (stastically at least) cause more injuries.
 
btw, i never said i was for extra games.  just sayin' it's a separate argument.

Yes, intent matters. 
 
Football is inherently a violent game.  You always derive a benefit from knocking a player out of a game.  That being said, that does not make organized bounty pools (especially those that coaches participate in or organize even) OK. 
 
From what I heard, they even had a specific incentive for having a player carted off.  If true, that is disgusting and well outside what the bounds should be. 
 
The fact that some people (not saying anyone here) are trying to paint those who oppose this practice as naive is ridiculous.  For one thing, "everybody's doing it" is not a defense when you are stupid enough to get caught.  We can only deal with those that we know about, I'm not giving the Saints a pass because "everyone does it."  When another team gets caught, then we'll deal with that one too.

Team is fined $500,000 - and loses their second round draft picks both this year and next.

Goodell seriously dropped the hammer here. In addition, there can be no more 'pay-for-performance' side pools on NFL teams. Doesn't just include bounties, but also positive things - cash pools for things like INTs, fumble recoveries, etc.

How do you suspend a GM for games?  He doesn't do anything on gameday.  Does this mean he is under "house arrest" until Week  9 or 10 (depending on when their bye hits) and cannot make transactions?

I assume it means he can't show up for work (in any sense) or communicate with anyone in the front office until the suspension is over.

Back before the 49er postseason game, a documentary crew was following the team and doing a project on Steve Gleason (former Saints player suffering from ALS). They recorded audio of Gregg Williams in a defensive team meeting instructing the players. The was edited for time (the original was about 40 seconds longer).
 
 It starts out as typical macho football bullshit, but takes a different turn towards the end. Made the more damning by the fact that the NFL told the Saints they were re-opening the bounty investigation prior to the last post-season, so this went on while they knew what was hanging over their heads.

Man I'm bored...I wasn't around for this (which is probably a good thing lol) but Favre got absolutely screwed in the 2009 Saints game. Bountygate didn't even cost them the game, nor did the interception, the 76 fumbles or the bad calls in the Saints favor all game long. All that did was tie the 40 year old gimp. It took the refs again in OT to give the Saints the win by 3.
