Meltzer: WM 28 Did Only 1.1 Million Buys
« on: April 11, 2012, 08:32:36 PM »
Using "only" in context here because WM 27 only did 41,000 fewer buys. Year long build for The Rock and he barely does anything.

Have to consider this a huge failure, maybe even a financial one depending on what they paid The Rock. Combine this with the crappy Survivor Series buyrate and it looks to be that Rocky no longer has wrestling drawing power.

Wrestlemania 26: 885,000 buys (down from 970,000 buys for WM25)

soooo, it could be argued that rock added buys to WM27 and more to WM28.

Huge failure?  How many other PPVs do over a million buys?  UFC?  Just curious.

It's a failure to meet the expectations. Rock's first singles match in eight years, Jericho back after two years, HIAC, AND the internet sploogefest champions in Punk & Bryan and they did pretty much the same as last year.

Financially I'm sure it's still a success, but it underperformed compared to what the expectations were.

the ppv model is rapidly declining, yet wrestlemania has increased in the last two years. that's a success.

with rock billed on both of them.

and sadly, it looks like people don't care about rock being in a match, but that rock is on the show...which means people care less about matches and more about stars.

I read WWE's expectations were a million buys (originally it was like 1.9 million buys, but they lowered it the weekend of WM).  So I think it performed as they were expecting.

Expectations were higher than a million from WWE.

It isn't a terrible thing as I am sure they made a boatload of money, but to do relatively the same amount of buys with a main event that had a year long build? That's pretty disappointing.

Wrestling fans are cheap nerds who spend 80 percent of their time at home online.  I would guess another million illegally streamed it, watched it on youtube, or DL'ed it before Raw on Monday

I'm surprised that the WWE hasn't thought of doing paid live streaming on WWE.com or partnered with Xbox Live for live streaming of their events -- the PPV model is out-dated.

They did do that, problem was they were charging full PPV price for their shitty streams and nobody bought them. So the answer is, they did it stupidly.

And of course, Rock isn't going to be on all the PPVs. Nor are HHH, 'Taker, or probably Jericho. Obviously they now have Brock, but allegedly he's also one of the highest paid guys on the roster.

MIAMI, Apr 01, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- WWE® WWE +0.34%  announced tonight that WrestleMania XXVIII set three records. With a sellout crowd of 78,363 fans from all 50 states and 36 countries, the annual pop culture extravaganza became Sun Life Stadium’s largest attended event and highest grossing entertainment event in history. Grossing $8.9 million, it was also the highest grossing live event in WWE history. The event was broadcast around the world on pay-per-view in more than 105 countries and 20 languages.

The previous Sun Life Stadium attendance record was 77,912 for the BCS National Championship in 2005. Its highest grossing entertainment event was U2 on June 29, 2011, grossing more than $7.5 million. WrestleMania XXVIII surpassed the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania in Houston, which grossed $7.2 million. This marks the third consecutive year WrestleMania broke the gross entertainment event record of the host venue.

“WrestleMania XXVIII in Miami-Dade County was an incredible event for WWE. WWE would like to thank our loyal fans, as well as the public and private sector partners for their tireless efforts to help make WrestleMania Week such a success,” said John P. Saboor, Senior Vice President of Special Events, WWE. “We now look forward to building on these achievements as we head to MetLife Stadium for WrestleMania XXIX next year.”

WrestleMania XXIX will take place on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. Ticket information will be announced later this year.

Yup. Utter, complete disaster. I'm amazed they are keeping the doors open.

That gate, by the way, is purely ticket sales, if I'm correct. This is without t-shirt sales, or any concessions (which they may or may not have gotten a cut from).

Nobody's calling it a disaster, hawss. Just that the PPV buys didn't meet the expectation.

Aren't people tired of WON making them look like idiots?

LOP has become a better source for verified wrestling news.

Think about that.

That doesn't even make sense when LOP gets half of its stories from reading F4W.
