Local/split screen co-op
« on: April 12, 2012, 02:23:24 PM »
Less and less games are using this, in favor of Live co-op.

Anyone else think this should be a standard feature in third person/first person shooters, instead of just assuming no one plays locally?  I was pretty annoyed when I found out War for Cybertron doesn't have local co-op options, and had to sit and watch so friends could enjoy taking on Omega Supreme instead of being able to play with them.

I just can't think of any reason NOT to put in such an option, since most gamers do have real life friends, and not just online friends..  And even if their RL friends have a Live enabled system, it's crazy that you'd be prevented from gaming with them if you're in one room together and only have one console/tv setup...  (Or god forbid, no internet service..  Such people do still exist.)

Multi-player gaming has become the norm. Since this is the case, and most people have the game and the system, it's just flat out better to not use the split screen. Even if your friends are in the same place just hook up separate TVs.

wow is so much better on a split screen.

but seriously, isn't it probable that these games look and play better when it's one person per console?  seems like if there are 2 people playing on a MMO (or at least a mutli player game that allows up to 20 or more people in one game at once) on the same console, fps would be affected.

and as for your example (of watching your friend play), that's not unusual.  there are many single player games.  zelda comes to mind.

I can't speak for kids, but in my case there's more than enough computer monitors around. And I'd rather get a smallre, fuller screen than a larger, cropped one.

Yup, this is my beef with local splitscreen as well. I'm not fond of the smaller viewing area for each player, plus I get distracted with what's going on in the other half of the screen.

I'd rather have my big screen all to myself, kthx.

That being said, I like the idea and benefits of local co-op (playing alongside a buddy in the same room), but that's not enough to override my distaste of the actual split screen.

Plus, depending on the game, I wouldn't want the other guy seeing what's on my screen if he's my opponent.
