Other than establishing the moral code and value system that modern Western civilization is based upon, and other than preserving Western civilization during the Dark Ages, religion has proven to be completely useless, you're right.

I think the comparison was intended to be, and I can't speak for LF, but which obsessed over a topic type person is the most annoying.

If you meet a superfan whose life revolves around sports, or a religion obsessed person who talks about religion non-stop, or someone who talks about politics non-stop, which is the worst to have to put up with?

I'd actually rather be around a sports obsessed person more than the others. You can at least get them riled up and have a fun argument with them.

Nobody ever made a country song called "Sports talk and her", but there is a song called "Politics, Religion, and Her".

Show me a time in history that did not have a group of people that tried to impose their morality on other people. I'm sure that if you listed some examples, oddly enough, you'd list a bunch of examples of Christians doing so, while leaving out other religions and leaving out secular movements. Because the current trend is "It's ok to bash Christianity, but not any other religion and no secular moral codes (which really don't even exist)".

True.  I mean, people get killed over sports and politics too, but not nearly as bad as with religion.

I both of those cases, I might argue that Communism was functioning to a large degree operating more as a secular (and atheistic) state religion.

I think that's it.  Religion(Christianity, Judaism, Islam, atheism, etc) by itself isn't a problem, but when given absolute power over society it becomes a danger.  Thankfully most of us don't live in countries where that's the case(even in the US).

I was thinking about this earlier after walking past a van that had a whole bunch of homemade, handwritten anti-Obama stickers on it and it looked like a total nutjob owned it.  And then one other time a man gave me a card to his youtube channel that was filled with religious weirdness.  Yet another nutjob.

And sports fans...well, I'm watching Friday Night Lights and if there are actually small towns that take sports that seriously then they're nutjobs as well.  I think those are the big three.  Obviously a combination of them can be fatal, but which one do you think is the worst when people obsess over it?
