2012 Movie Wrap Up
« on: January 02, 2013, 04:39:20 AM »
End of every year I like to compile a list of my favorite films and ones I'd recommend plus I like to read everyone else's picks as well.

One of those rare years where I could make a top ten I feel good about, usually I make a top 5. Really confident in my top two. Loved Zero Dark Thirty, extremely well put together and acted. The Dark Knight Rises people can pick apart to death, but I loved the story telling, Bane's voice and eye acting, Catwoman, Alfred, Gordon, Blake, Batman's goodbye, all of it.  The rest are interchangeable.

Top 10

1. Zero Dark Thirty
2. The Dark Knight Rises
3. Life of Pi
4. Django Unchained
5. Argo
6. The Silver Linings Playbook
7. The Cabin In The Woods
8. Dredd (best action movie of the year)
9. The Avengers (most quotable movie of the year)
10. Skyfall

Recommendations

Contraband
Haywire (only if you love Gina Carano)
Underworld: Awakening (best of the series)
The Grey
Chronicle (surprisingly good superhero film using found footage)
Project X (Chronicle meets Risky business on steroids and ecstasy)
Safe House
Gone (surprisingly good)
John Carter
21 Jump Street (made me a Channing Tatum fan)
ATM
Lockout
Safe (one of the better Statham movies)
The Dictator
Men in Black 3
Mansome
Prometheus
Safety Not Guaranteed
Ted
People Like Us
The Amazing Spiderman
The Bourne Legacy
Premium Rush
Resident Evil: Retribution (if you liked all the others)
End of Watch
Looper
V/H/S
Flight
The Bay
Hitchcock
Killing Them Softly
The Collection (2nd best horror movie of the year)
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (wanted to love it, but it's no LOTR)
Jack Reacher

I liked:
Castaway on the Moon
Queen of Versailles
The Avengers
The Hobbit
Mission Impossible 4
John Carter
CAbin in the woods
Amazing Spiderman
Dredd
Haywire
Goon
The Raid: redemption

I was noncommital about:
The Hunger Games
Dark Knight Rises
Ted
Brave
21 Jump Street
Mirror Mirror
Total Recall
The Descendants
Pirates band of misfits
Prometheus: The Wrong Scott Died.

I hated:
Journey 2
Ghost Rider 2
Chronicle
The Grey

I tend to avoid the things I won't like. I"d recommend Queen of Versailles as a documentary, about a rich couple who are building a massive house in 2007. It's fascinating.

As you all know, I generally don't get a finalized top 10 until like....July.

But here is what I've liked so far, in a vague order of preference:

Django Unchained
The Dark Knight Rises
Argo
Moonrise Kingdom
The Cabin in the Woods
21 Jump Street
Bernie
The Avengers
Ted

Everyone forgot an art house film called The Expendables 2.

SCB, stupid question, but are your movies ranked, or are you just saying your top 2 are the best two and the rest are in no particular order?

That's My Boy! was 2011, right? I just saw that this year. Very funny.

Yeah my top 2 I feel pretty solid on, the rest can be interchanged. They're all really enjoyable for different reasons.

Les Mis I'm assuming you have not seen because that should be in your top ten.

My top ten looks like yours, but I haven't seen Zero Dark Thirty yet so I am unsure but I would guess it would be in my top ten.

There are 5 movies or so on your recommended list that i would suggest are unwatchable.

Django is probably the only movie to exceed my expectations. I had high hopes for a few films, some were good enough some fell short. I think Lincoln was going to be better but DDL and TLJ make it a must see anyway. TDKR had unreal expectations so there was no way it could exceed, but I still loved it.

I saw a lot more. I didn't make a worst of 2012 list this time.

I doubt I'll ever see Les Mis. Not into musicals.

The Imposter is a brilliant documentary, dudes. It'll be in my top 10 for sure when I make one.

I saw about 70 films at the cinema this year. Gotta remember them!

It is really good and you will enjoy it. It is probably the best movie made this year.

Netflix predicts I'll hate that so I've been avoiding it.

I'd watch it if Susan Sarandon Jr. gets her tits out in it.  Does Susan Sarandon Jr. get her tits out in it?
