PS2 prices are insane
« on: April 25, 2013, 10:24:35 PM »
http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-2-Console-Slim-Black/dp/B000TLU67W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366942954&sr=8-1&keywords=playstation+2

And this is one of the cheaper offers,  They're normally up to 200 or more..

What's up with that?  They should be selling PS2's for 50 or less now!  I thought they overproduced these things.

Who's spending 100's on old consoles?

IT's a damn good console with an fucking amazing library of games.  I still have mine and I've had it for over a decade.  No issues still.  I'm not shocked.  Most people don't want a PS3 and those who traded in their PS2 for a PS3 and then found out how horrible it's backwards compatibility is, or you know eventually cancelled, were fucking disappointed.  Sure a lot of good classic games are on the PSN but why fucking pay for it when you already own a copy?  A lot of good classic games aren't as well.

Third party sellers on Amazon usually jack the prices up on old consoles like that.

I'm fairly sure you can get a PS2 at Gamestop for $50.

I'm suprised it's at that price already.  It hasn't been discontinued very long, I know they were making them up until last year.  Like POE said you could probably get it pretty cheap at the Gamestops.
They're really good for hacking into and using ROMs and what not.

Sorry I didn't get to this earlier.

Like said above, the short answer is the system is discontinued. Sony is not making any more, so once they're gone they're gone. People still want them, but can't get them easily at stores. Supply and demand...

Gamestop units may be cheap, but many consumers look down at refurbished units.

The slims are supposed to be pretty bad for that, as opposed to fatty's and originals.

I've seen some claims the slims have framerate issues?  Can anyone confirm?

I know the slims work on less power, but my games seem to run well enough.

*Raises hand* I would much rather spend a little more and know that I'm getting (what should be) a factory working product. I'll tend to buy games second hand, but the word "refurbished" bothers me. I know that sometimes refurbished just really means "open box" and everything is fine, but it can also mean "put back together with duct tape after someone has fucked it up".

Working in the tech industry and seeing what refurbished really means I don't blame you.  I have no issues buying consoles from hole in the wall mom & pop classic game shops as those are also people who you can pay to repair the old units and have actually knowledge of that shit.  A used console from a Gamestop though or any major company....hell no

Don't they come with some kind of warranty, though?

If it was only a little more money, new is best.  But if you can spend the same amount of money buying 4 or 5 refurbished consoles, even if one or two of them break down quickly, you're still ahead of the game.

They do but it's a shit warranty.  For most the devices I support it's only a three month warranty :/

My PS2 is original launch run and still running like a boss, zero issues ever...unlike my PS3 (or PS1 after I modded it)

As I said I've had mine for over a decade.  Pretty much a launch date system.  PS2 was great.  That's why seeing what the PS3 became is so disappointing.

BTW, you can't buy them at Gamestop anymore or won't be shortly.  They are liquidating that generation of games and consoles from their inventory. (I know a manager for the company)

Game Xchange, a store that caters to the retro crowd, is right down the street from our Gamestop.  You can buy systems all the way back to the Atari 2600, and even before that.  :D

Random and probably has nothing to do with the PS2, other than that while adjusted for inflation, still much cheaper than a Neo-Geo

Crazy.

Other tech usually becomes worthless when it becomes obsolete, scarcity be damned.  But not consoles..

I'm still certain older game stuffs used to be a lot cheaper, though.  I guess Gamestops responsible for all the gogueing?

They don't as they only deal in modern games.  Old games you can't find easily will always have high value.  Just like any "collector's" item.

Gamestop, GAME, EB Games, Etc are cause for a completely different problem with the gaming community as active used games sales in the style they do it is harmful to game development
