Yea I've read those articles.  Pretty much everything I've said that the Xbox One is going to be or they are planning on implementing has been confirmed by them.  I still stand by this console beating out PS4.  Maybe not on launch day but give it a month or two and it will.  Once people see the way the Xbox One works and the new innovations it brings to the table in comparison to the PS3 2.0 they'll start switching.

And once they realize that "OMG I CAN SHARE MY GAMEZ!" all the bitching will go away.

They're forgetting that you can name 10 friends on your list as Family and those people can download and play the game any time you're not using it. Sounds like pretty easy sharing to me.

New policy changes were released today, but the site where they're posted is getting pounded so I haven't read them yet...

Q:    Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection?
A:    No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet. We’re designing Xbox One to be your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and always ready. We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.

Q:    Can I use my current gamertag on Xbox One and will my Gamerscore and Achievements transfer?
A:    Yes. Your current Xbox Live Gamertag will stay with you on Xbox One if you choose to keep it, and your hard-earned Gamerscore and Achievements will indeed carry over from Xbox 360.

Q:    Will Xbox One allow players to trade in, purchase and play pre-owned games?
A:    We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later.

  • No more always online requirement
  • The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
  • All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
  • An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
  • All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
  • No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
  • Region locks have been dropped
Update (Confirmed): Via the Xbox blog, Xbox head Don Mattrick writes:
"An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360."<blockquote> </blockquote>

I'm honestly disappointed they back tracked.  We've essentially decided we want console gaming to be stagnant.  Because of these changes they are also dropping the ability to play the games without the disc, the ability to share your games via the cloud, the ability to have the system constantly apply updates to make sure the games always have the latest content and patches, and just about EVERYTHING that was actually the entire point of the internet heartbeat and cloud.

I really hope they slowly re-introduce all that over the next year.

That's not really correct.

Q:    How do consumers benefit by being connected to the cloud?
A:    The cloud makes every experience better and more accessible.  Because Xbox One is powered by the cloud:

  • Your games have more power available to create new gameplay, persistent worlds, and deeper experiences.
  • Your system and games can update automatically, so you shouldn’t have to wait for downloads or updates.
  • Your games and entertainment are stored and saved in the cloud, so you can access them anytime, from any Xbox One.*
  • Start a game, movie, or TV show on one console and finish exactly where you left off on another.
  • You can play multiplayer games with your friends, stream movies or TV shows right away, and enjoy the community and social features of Xbox Live.
  • Xbox One can recognize you, log you in and tailor your home screen just for you.

So they are still pushing the updates?  Form what I read on xbox.com the update pushing was being cancelled.  I know the sharing of games is.

So you could share games through the cloud? That seemed even more convenient than loaning a disc, which would then require updates when run on your friend's console.

Correct.  You would be able to share a game in your library with up to 10 friends on your friends list at a time.  The only stipulation's were they had to have been on your friends list for over 30 days and I believe only one person could play it at a time.  Still was an amazing idea.  Something even PC doesn't allow.

What I would really like to know as it isn't to clear is is the No-DRM thing mean they aren't allowing Developers/Publishers to put DRM on their games or is that still being allowed, aka nothing has changed on that end XD

If it is that they aren't allowing DRM at all that means the internet SHOULD switch over to loving Xbox One and hating PS4 as PS4 hasn't said anything to retract the statement of allowing developers/publishers to put on DRM

No DRM now. You can give out your disc and anyone can play it.

I'm actually a little disappointed with this. The 10-person family sharing is more than enough for people to share games with their friends. All those options did nothing to hamper the Xbox experience, but because the Internet cried "RULES!!! FUCK YOU!" we got screwed out of some really great features.

Thank you, internet. #GFY

Ok but you can give your PS4 disc to friends but if it's a DRM game they still won't be able to play it.  As I said it's not quite clear what they mean here.  Is it nothing changed or literally no DRM.

A few co-workers and I are in agreeance though that this was just a bad move.

This also means no chance of game discounts like with Steam that they were trying to set up to give us as the used games market still exists for the system :/

Yeah, but The Internet...

You can laugh, but they're out there..

I even know a guy that's in this boat with his 360.  Not enough ports to hook up the 360 on top of everything else..

So I guess MS using their drm policy to leverage exclusivity deals didn't pan out like they'd hoped?

Glad they came to their senses.

You really think they'd do that, if they could kill the used market?

Or more, would the dev's allow it?  They could offer cheaper games on Live right now, but they don't.  A lot of games tend to be "Day of release" expensive on Live long after new disk versions drop in price.  There must be a reason for it.

Cheap PC games isn't only a steam thing.  In general, older PC games become dirt cheap, while console games almost never become as inexpensive.

Yes they would.  They've stated that was their goal in fact.  Furthermore, your PC example is proof it would happen and the Dev's would allow it.  Games didn't become dirt cheap on PC until Steam gained in popularity and the used game market for PC was completely phased out.

As long as there are used games that are pushed on the consumer as though it is just as good as buying a new copy (why's it used and cheaper then if it's the same quality?) and those dominant the sales there is no financial way to discount the sale of the games new as much or as quickly.  It also requires the digital distribution to be used for it to be justified and currently I don't know many people who buy digital Xbox games other than the Arcade games which you have no choice but to buy digitally.

I think Microsoft had no intention of making their digital download platform like Steam. It would be like Steam but without the deals/discounts. So it would be GFWL but on a console.

I'm still not going to get a Xbox One because nothing about the system has actually impressed me and I feel that they are forcing Kinect integration. Plus, you know that any PS4 versions of multiplatform games will be weaker due to the Xbox One.

I don't give a flying fuck about sharing games with my friends over the internet if I can't go into a store and by a used game on the cheap...doesn't even come close to comparing.

If they said "games will be twenty quid cheaper bought online" I'd have signed up. New release Games on Xbox live are more expensive than in brick and mortar shops here. They educated people not to think there was an advantage to buying online.
