Is there any situation where Germany might not have anything to play for against the U.S.?

Technically, no. If US beats Portugal tomorrow, then Portugal is eliminated and all Germany would have to do is not lose by 3 goals while Ghana doesn't win by 3-4 goals the following week.

It's next to impossible due to their goal differential. If USA wins tomorrow, then they are through and have nothing to play for against Germany.

If USA wins tomorrow, then they would still have something to play for against Germany.  A result against Germany would win them the group and play Group H runner-up instead of the Group H winner.

My gut tells me that US and Ghana are going to end up tied at 4 points and Ghana is going to go through either on Goal Differential or Goals Scored even though the US beat them head to head.

It would be the American style to defeat Ghana and then be eliminated by Ghana somehow.

It is ridiculous that FIFA uses head to head as the # 3 tiebreaker between 2 teams.  The goal differential and goals scored tiebreakers are ripe for corruption.

It just dawned on me that only 4 European sides may advance (Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany).  The other 75% could be comprised of South America, Africa and CONCACAF.

This game is pretty much must win because of the Germany draw. Even if we draw today, I just know Ghana will win next week like 7-0 and eliminate us.

Our only chance is if Cristiano is still injured and won't play as well.

On the bright side, they didn't strike the ball at a Make a Wish child and kill him before he met Ronaldo. So, there's that.

30 seconds from advancing.

Feels like a loss.

Portugal 3-0 over Ghana and Germany 3-1 over the US means we are drawing lots with the Portuguese to advance to the knockout round.

We absolutely outplayed Portugal, so the notion of them even beating Ghana, let alone decisively seems like a pipe dream at this point.

I think we just need to pray for a Portugal draw, because a victory or draw against Germany is unlikely. If we lose to Germany 2-1 and Ghana wins 1-0, then I think it goes to that 3rd tiebreaker.

But really, we are going to fucking get eliminated by Ghana again even though we beat them.

If the difference in the two games is 2 total goals with Germany and Ghana winning, then the group will be Germany, USA, Ghana and Portugal.

The US goes to 3rd if the difference in the two games is 3 or more (i.e. Germany wins by 2 or Ghana wins by 2).

I am not sweating Portugal too much, but the fact head to head is so low in the FIFA tiebreakers has me sick about Ghana.

Oh yeah, I am not worried about Portugal at all really. Germany decimated them and we gave them the first goal, outplayed them almost the whole game and then Michael FUCKING Bradley had to give the ball away again and kill us.

I wonder how all out Germany will play, knowing that a draw makes us both advance with them winning the group due to goals differential.

I am worried about Portugal allowing an early goal and packing it in for the rest of the day allowing Ghana to breeze to a 3 goal victory.

The Goal Differential tiebreaker is one thing, but how does FIFA justify a Goals Scored tiebreaker over head to head?

Because FIFA is stupid and corrupt. They would sell the World Cup to Mars if they had the cash.

So I heard Suarez bit an Italian defender.  Is this the third time in less than five years?!

Yes, the last time got him suspended for 10 games. He still led the BPL in scoring by a ton because he had a better year than Messi and in a tougher league without taking Liverpool's penalty shots.

He is the best player in the world right now, but is also a racist cannibal who can't stop doing this shit. His World Cup is very likely over and he will probably miss the first 6-8 games for Liverpool/Real Madrid.

Him and Cristiano on the same team will only work in fantasy leagues, they will never co-exist.

Suarez banned from football activity for 4 months + 9 competitive international matches.

At the Half:

US 0
Germany 0

Portugal 1
Ghana 0

The U.S. survives the Group of Death.

Tuesday at 4 against most likely Belgium.

This match/game/whatever has been kind of nuts.  I've actually watched the whole thing.

I've called soccer a boring sport with exciting moments.  THAT was an exciting, dramatic moment.

Brazil advances.

Wasn't the last Brazilian kick a violation because he stopped and started twice?
