Less than a day until the opening game of the World Cup. 2010 was an amazing tournament and this one looks like it could be even better. Really wish the old boards hadn't died, because Koppo and I had an epic live commentary of the last one. The Dempsey goal nearly killed us.

Wasn't it the Donovan goal? Landon's goal against Algeria is one of the top sports moments of my lifetime. I really wish Landon was on the team for 2014.

Brazil opened with a somewhat controversial win over Croatia. Total flop led to a PK that Brazil converted (Croatia's keeper had 2 hands on the ball and still couldn't save it) to go ahead 2-1 in the final 20 minutes.

Opening game was weird, but I don't think Croatia has a lot of room to complain. Corluka should have been sent off for the tackle a few minutes before the PK.

im starting to hate the world cup. there are co-workers on their computers watching it instead of working. in fact, there's a group of them that are just sitting around one person's computer together. and they are cheering, booing, grunting, etc. fucking annoying. fuck you world cup for multiplying the the number of annoying people i work with.

Fucking Costa Rica is in first place in one of the groups of death. What the hell is going on?! Heard it was really good. Not quite as insane as the Netherlands curb-stomping Spain yesterday. I love the World Cup.

Haven't seen/heard much about the games today.

Managed to get off work for all three US group games. Heading to downtown KC tomorrow for a whole day of game watching. Didn't do it last time and I've been kicking myself ever since.

France completely dominated Honduras. Honduras didn't even play football the first 45. When Honduras was reduced to 10 men, it was easy. Benzema nearly had a hat trick.

Argentina got a tough test from Bosnia & Herzegovina. Argentina was really cautious before opening up a bit more in the second half. Messi had a Messi-like goal.

I am reading that US/Ghana will be played in a rainstorm. I would have to think that favors the US a little bit to slow down the pitch?

Because Germany is going to beat everyone because they are Germany. So, if Portugal pulled off an upset, it would essentially mean that they would advance and the only way USA would advance is if they also beat Germany, which won't happen.

The huge goal differential helps greatly as well, not to mention that douchebag got a red card and is now out of the next game against USA. It's far from a slam dunk, but so far everything that needed to go right has except for Altidore's injury.

Yep, ideal results today, aside from Altidore's injury which I am presuming will keep him out of the next two matches.

The US win and Portugal loss (especially the large margin of Portugal's defeat) ensures that the US can survive a loss to Portugal and still advance.

Well, if we lose to Portugal by say 2-1 and Portugal beats Ghana, that pretty much means we have to beat Germany. So, we are in a very good position, but we are still in trouble if we lose to Portugal. Very good shape if we get a draw, assuming Ghana doesn't shock Germany.

Yes, losing to Portugal would require Ghana to beat the Portuguese. Then it would come down to whoever got their ass kicked by Germany the least can advance and play the Group H winner.

Yeah, we wanted Germany to win because now it gets a bit messy. With the loss, Ghana would've been gone, meaning we only needed to stay ahead of Portugal. Now, Ghana still has hope and we may need to beat Portugal tomorrow instead of just tie. With the goal differential still in our favor, we are in good shape to advance with a tie, but you don't want to risk it.

You certainly don't want a situation where you have to defeat or tie Germany.
