So I got the New Japan Network
« on: March 10, 2015, 07:35:43 PM »
New Japan has their own version of the WWE Network. 999 Yen per month. That comes out to about $8.50.  They have their New Japan Cup Tournament ongoing, and I'm a sucker for tournaments in case you couldn't tell.

There's a dude named Toru Yano. Maybe it's coincidence but Toru Yano was the name of a scientist in Godzilla vs. Hedorah (aka Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster).

Anyway, are their any New Japan gems that I should seek out?

I don't know if last years G1 is up, but if it is, anything with AJ in it was absolute aces.

If they have it, G1 Climax 1991 & 1992 are pretty good. Also anything with the Best of the Super Juniors tournament is great too.

I followed that dude on Twitter, but had to stop simply because of the amount of play by play he did of matches.  It became a timeline flooding issue for me, but he is sharp for certain.

I didn't take Nakamura last year, nor was he my concern for this year.

Well you know my thoughts on Tanahashi. I can only hope luck smiles upon me again with regards to order of picks and will have to adjust accordingly. I can also be spiteful to you and/or Zandrax where Allan is concerned.  >:(  ;)

I'm watching Round Three of the New Japan Cup. It's interesting because it's just one camera angle with no commentary. Obviously not meant for TV, but it's like I'm watching live rasslin'!

No, all commentary I've heard is Japanese so there's a learning curve. Honestly I probably wouldn't have bitten on it if I hadn't started watching the New Japan Axs show.

I may create a New Japan drinking game out of this. Starting with take one drink anytime somebody gets whipped into the barricade.

Hogna vs. Fujinami is surreal. Vince introduces Hogan, and a couple minutes into the match Hogan has Fujinami in a surfboard/bow and arrow like submission.

G1 Climax 25 starts Sunday night. I'll be posting regularly about it either here or in its own thread.

Yeah it seems Ibushi is in the tournament after all. Did he replace somebody?

Ibushi has been in the 2015 G1 lineup all along.  He missed last year due to injury and was replaced by Honma.  I thought it was odd that Ibushi wasn't on Dominion, the 2nd biggest show of the year up till that point.

It's fun to see logic in wrestling again. Yes I know NXT has it but this is fun too.

During the G1 Climax, the only two matches the eventual winner Hiroshi Tanahashi lost were to Bad Luck Fale and Tetsuya Naito.

Shinsuke Nakamura pinned IC Champion Hirooki Goto in their tournament match.

AJ Styles cleanly pinned IWGP World Champion Kazuchika Okada in a tag match.

Now most recently Satoshi Kojima (who is in a tag team with Hiroyoshi Tenzan) pinned tag champion Doc Gallows during an 8 man tag.

Now at the big events at the end of this month, Nakamura is challenging Goto for the IC Belt, Okada will defend the world title against Styles, Tanahashi will put his winning briefcase up against Fale, and Kojima and Tenzan will challenge Gallows and Karl Anderson for the tag titles.

Isn't it great how wins add up to bigger things?

The 10/12 "King Of Pro Wrestling" event will broadcast on the New Japan Network with English Commentary. I'm not quite sure how it'll work, but Keven Kelly and Matt Striker will be doing the commentary.

IWGP Heavyweight Championship - Kazuchika Okada (c) vs. AJ Styles.  This should be excellent. Their match in July is on my MOTY shortlist. AJ recently pinned Okada in a tag match, thus setting up a title shot.

#1 Contender Briefcase - Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetsuya Naito. This should also be good. Naito has completed a slow heel turn. He was one of only two men to pin Tanahashi during the G1 tournament. The other was Bad Luck Fale, who got a shot at the briefcase last month. See how following up on wins and losses makes things fun?

NEVER Openweight Championship - Togi Makabe (c) vs. Tomohiro Ishii. These guys have been feuding over the belt all year. Good stuff, but we've seen it before.

Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale, Doc Gallows, Karl Anderson) vs. CHAOS (Kazushi Sakuraba, Shinsuke Nakamura & Toru Yano)

IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship -  Kenny Omega (c) vs. Matt Sydal. I'm only mildly familiar with Omega, but this should be a good high flying match.

IWGP Jr. Tag Team Championship - reDragon (c) vs. RPG Vice. The Jr. Tag Division is much better than the Heavyweight Tag Division, even though there are only like four teams.

Captain New Japan, Hirooki Goto, Katsuyori Shibata & Kota Ibushi vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Manabu Nakanishi, Satoshi Kojima & Yuji Nagata

* Tomoaka Honma vs. Yoshi-Hashi. My hunch is Honma gets a victory and then challenges Ishii after Ishii topples Makabe. Honma pinned Ishii in the G1 and Makabe is Honma's GBH teammate.

Obligatory Massive Multi-Man Tag -  David Finlay, Jay White, Juice Robinson (CJ Parker), Sho Tanaka & Yohei Komatsu vs. Jushin Thunder Liger, Kushida, Mascara Dorada, Ryusuke Taguchi & Tiger Mask.

I don't follow any of this really, but I saw the GIF of AJ challenging him and the big POP it got on Twitter.

Should be a legit MOTY candidate.

Somewhat related, Nakamura probably has the best RKO counter https://pbs.twimg.com/tweet_video/CTNNauIWsAAyjtx.mp4
