Hull City Boss Steve Bruce is a twat. After the match, he complained that the refs helped out Arsenal on their first 2 goals. Did he even watch this fucking game? Arsenal would've been awarded at least 2 penalty kicks if this game took place in the middle of March. The Fox announcers spent the whole game criticizing the refs for helping out Hull City and he thinks they were for Arsenal?

Christ, what an asshole.

Asking as someone who may finally be getting into soccer, who do you root for and why?

I'm mainly talking EPL but I'd be curious about any leagues including MLS and La Liga too.

I'd be happy to break this out into its own thread if you don't what this one hijacked.

The truth is, about 3-4 years ago I just asked my soccer fanatic friend to pick me an English team like the Dolphins. One that constantly underachieves, so he picked Arsenal.

In the English  Premier League, only 4-5 teams have any shot at the title. There are no Cinderella stories. Money talks over here, MLB has nothing on them. So, if you want to cheer for a team that won't be in 8th place for the next 10 years or until an Oil Sheik buys them, your choices are:

-Manchester United (Don't you dare)
-Manchester City (Title-less for 46 years until an Oil Shiek bought them and now they buy everyone)
-Chelsea (Fuck Chelsea)
-Arsenal (Hooray!)
-Liverpool (Good history to the team, about to sell it's best player for $95 Million. It's Luis Suarez, the biting racist)

2nd tier teams are Tottenham and Everton, with Everton making a run at the Top 4. Top 4 means you get to go to the Champions League which is a huge European tournament consisting of only the best teams and champions. So, even if you finish 3rd, you can have a good season. Tim Howard is their goalie too, so that's cool.

The EPL is the best league in the world because it has the most competition. Other leagues just have two top teams and the rest are jobbers. Plus, there really isn't a lot of diving or paid off officials. It's as pure as soccer can get.

Everton was a team I was interested in because Tim Howard.  For now I'll just try to follow it to some degree and see if I ever end up liking someone in that league or not.

Thanks for the response.  It's funny because I've become interested in the sport in part because of this thread.  It's kind of like when I finally bought Fallout 3 for $20 because we had an awesome thread on that game.  You guys make it sound interesting so I decided to pay attention.

Atlanta gets an MLS team in a couple of years and I'm going to check that out of course.  It should be pretty cool they said they'll arrange the seating so that 29,000 would be capacity for soccer in the new Falcons stadium.

Greatest EPL primer EVER.

I am also an Arsenal supporter. I started as a Newcastle fan, and will root for the Toon from time to time, but Arsenal has ties to Denver as their primary shareholder is Stan Kroenke (Nuggets, Avalanche, Rapids, Mammoth and, somehow, St. Louis Rams), and the MLS Colorado Rapids is Arsenal's partner club. I keep waiting for them to come to Colorado to play a friendly with the Rapids, but they decided to play the New York Red Bulls this year instead, cuz Thierry Henry.

And, basically, if you root for the Yankees, Lakers or Cowboys - chances are you'll end up buying a Manchester United kit at some point...

Man U was never in consideration because I thought they were the top team.  No fun in rooting for them.

Man U was the top team forever, they just had a VERY off year because their manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired and the new guy was just the wrong guy. Not coincidentally enough, this was the best year for the league in it's existence because 4 teams had a legitimate shot at the title until the last month. The team that held the top spot the longest was Arsenal, and they only missed out because they all got AIDS midway through.

They're better now.
