Brody
« on: October 15, 2015, 09:07:57 PM »
As most of you know, I started watching wrestling as an adult. It was only a few years before Brody was murdered, and being in NY with no cable I only knew the WWF with the occasional WCW show, so I never saw him. I read about him in the Apter mags, that was it.

I mentioned elsewhere how I went on a Wikipedia run hopping from wrestler to wrestler, and put a few books on my library queue. One was a bio of Brody by his widow and his friend Larry Matysik Sam Munchik's protégé from St. Louis.

I highly recommend it. Sad but hopeful book. He was quite a guy. Maybe one of the smartest wrestlers business wise. Sad a guy with no substance problem was cut down like that. Most of you probably know him better, but read this if you get a chance

Dutch Mantell's opinion of the Brody murder. This may bring a tear to your eye.

Never saw much of him as it was a lil before my time but was a great book.  I'm working on Backlund's book right now and its amazing.

If Dutch Mantell did not go to the baseball field, I almost wonder if there would have been two murders that taken place. Dutch and Brody.

The videos I linked have been stripped out, but I wrote about Brody's death four years ago.

Thanks for both those links

Dave, without the video I'm missing your 3 bullet points - what was that about Brody having no friends? That's nonsense. And the picture?

Local indy(SICW), continuing the tradition of Wrestling at the Chase, honored him earlier this year.  Brody's wife came in for an apperance.

BR, I don't specifically recall, but I will try to track down another upload of the Tony Atlas interview.  The picture thing had something to do with the fact that Brody had a picture of his son he was giving Atlas so he could do a drawing of him.

I just realized the Brody book you read was the one written by Larry Matysik.  I have heard you have to be careful with that one because Larry clearly idolized Brody and that comes through in the narrative.  This one is hard to find, but is generally held in higher regard.  Best example of that is how he presents the issue in the cage between Luger and Brody.

http://www.crowbarpress.com/cbp-books/05-bb.html

I also read your OP again and you're right about Brody in general.  He was very bright and very shrewd.  Allegedly he and Stan Hansen had both been mistreated by promoters early in their careers and that kind of shaped their attitude about how to deal with promoters going forward.

I would also like to add that I am a huge Brody fan, I'm just trying to put into context Matysik's book.

Here's some WCMB discussion about the book and his murder including some discussion about the video I had initially posted on my blog.

will take some time but thanks. He does say there are two ways to look at the Luger incident, but honestly, if you know anything about Luger it's not hard to believe he was being a douchebag

Tony Atlas is interesting but really full of himself. Gotta take him with a grain of salt

Thanks for the info

If you haven't seen the Luger situation it is worth tracking down.

From what I understand/believe, Brody was put out with the promoter more than anything and didn't intend to teach Lex a lesson or intimidate him.  I don't believe there's any basis in the idea that Luger was scared of Brody that night either.

Speaking of Tony, he complimented my mom's feet when she was a flight attendant. Then said, " I have a thing for feet" which he documented in his book.

I saw a video of Luger talking about it on youtube and Lex admitted to being scared. He claimed not to know why Brody did it though

I'll tread lightly here after I survived the Bobby Heenan thread. Lets just say I don't worship Brody and Luger walked...clearly...and he wasn't who looked like an idiot that night. It's not some rare old wrestling footage. It's been on YouTube for a long time.

Luger jumped out of the ring and ran like a scalded cat, but it was more out of fear of what a mix up with Brody would do to his career than being afraid to fight Brody, IMO.

Well he admits to being afraid Brody would hurt him - but that doesn't prove one way or another who was right or wrong

I don't even buy it if Luger said it (I realize he did yes). Luger has dropped his false front completely. Watch any of his shoots.

Probably meant he was scared Brody would take liberties or botch a move since he was in a crazy state of mind.

People forget that Luger was a semi-pro level football player, which doesn't make him badass or anything, but it does mean he's not just some prissy bodybuilder.
