Kinect: Like the Wii, But With Less Cracked HDTV Screens
« on: November 11, 2010, 10:25:09 AM »
Got this as a wedding present from my lovely bride and only had a bit to play with it before heading off on our honeymoon, but from playing a bit of Kinect Adventures and Dance Central, I can safely say that this kicks the Wii's ass, and I'm extrapolating here and know that the Move can sense depth due to the glowy globe, but just the fact that I don't need no controller to play any of this is just too neat.

My Kinect now knows who I am just by looking at me and logs me into the proper account on boot.  It can tell where I'm at in the room and what I'm doing, even through a table that's set in front of the couch.  Of course, the sensing gets a bit confused so my Avatar looks like it's got goat legs half the time in Adventures, the thing still senses my movements enough to hit 100% on Poker Face in DCentral.

Dance Central is fun, and before you perform the song you're allowed to practice the moves individually, so at least on the easy levels one can feel like they're advancing the game while actually learning dance moves.

More to come as I try it out, but definately looking forward to fiddling with this when I get back from Fort Myers.

Anyone else get to play with the Kinect?

I used it for a couple of minutes. Might be interested in the Dance CEntral actually. Hmm.

Finally played it, and will certainly buy one when my finances call for it. Even the packaged game (Kinect Adventures) is fun. Haven't tried any of the dancing games, but may do so soon, hopefully.

Too bad we still have a year to wait before we can swing lightsabers though...

I'll probably get it when the price drops or Dance Central is a pack-in title

Kinect basically makes the Wii obsolete. Hell, the PS Move makes the Wii obsolete, but the Kinect is worlds ahead.

Biggest problem with the Kinect is the space requirements for it to work properly, at least for me. My living room is very small, and mostly I play on my PC monitor, but will put it on the big screen when friends come over.. I just don't have enough room to take advantage of the Kinect.

That said, the PS move is really what makes the Wii obsolete, Kinect is a bit of a different animal.

same here.  i measured it out and we have about 2' of vertical space (front of couch towards kinect).  i'm probably going to have to invest in one of those things to mount it to the top of my flat screen.  that'll give me another 6".  ;)

We've got a clear spot that's diagonally away from the Kinect.  Luckily, the television rotates and the Kinect doesn't seem to have problems detecting no matter where you are past a certain distance.

In short, try a diagonal set-up.  Remember, it's the camera that you're going to be centered on.  The television is just for reference.   :)

Dance Central is the one made by the DDR people?

Also I played Kinect Sports the other day, and I love some of the bowling mini-games. One you have to knock down as many pins in a minute as possible, but the pins reset right away. You don't get frames per se. So you can just keep hurling ball after ball at the pins to rack up a score.

Dance Central is Harmonix.   :music_mini:

Ok, the wife and I just bought a Kinect at midnight today for a boxing day special, and there really is no comparison. This thing is absolutely light years ahead of the Wii, and the PS Move is just ridiculous (in a bad way) side-by-side. It worked flawlessly, even with just 6' of space. Unreal.

Nothing but the truth. Not being locked down by ridiculous, inaccurate controllers is awesome.

Considered getting one, but I only used my DDR pad like once, and now it's in storage.  So I dunno...  It looks cool, sounds cool....

I have a feeling it'd be a lot more fun at parties, but get old as a solo hobby.

You've got to be kidding. The Kinect rocks all over the Wii in every way that I've seen so far.

spent the weekend with the Kinect at my ski house, very very very fun.  Doesn't seem as accurate as Wii, but way more fun

Interesting. That has been one of my biggest gripes with the Wii - how inaccurate it is. I find the Kinect more accurate tracking a larger object - a hand for tracking navigation, for example - than the Wii tracking a small remote sensor.

I get so aggravated trying to enter a name in a game on the Wii, for example, due to the jumpiness of the remote's horrible tracking.

To be fair, the Kinect has had some errors and missteps as well, but on the whole, it's still a vastly better experience than the Wii. The graphics are so much better, there's no multi-button combinations to get anything done.

An example here: At Christmas, we were at my sisters' place, and we got everyone playing Wii Golf. There was so much confusion about what button to press at what time (B, then A, then hold A again, and swing) versus the Kinect, where you just turn sideways and "address the ball" and make a swinging motion. It's so much easier on the Kinect.

I also love how the running commentary in the Kinect Sports interacts with your performance. For example, you hit a golf shot, and it's like live TV golf commentary. The dude exclaims about how well you hit the ball, and then there's follow up on your next shot, and you get voice tips on the upcoming shot based on your position, lie, and so forth.

It's just so far advanced it's ridiculous.

kinect doesn't have anything as cool to get drunk and play with family members as wii sports. that game is old as shit and is still streets ahead of any kinect titles.

Ever try playing drunken Wii sports while sitting in an easy chair?  :D

I figured out early all you need is the right wrist motions, and was scoring home runs with my feet up, eating scoops and drinking beer, and beating the guys who were taking it seriously.
