How anal are you?
« on: September 08, 2016, 06:38:33 PM »
..at retro gaming.  :)

I used to be bothered by things like aspect ratio and accurate sound, but one day I was squinting at a much too small Super Pacman and asked "why".  Then I blew up the screen with "wide fit" and was much happier.

I'd imagine the true blue purist's are the folks who played the games as kids in an arcade or on an original console, but since I usually have NOT had that experience, it doesn't make much sense to get uptight over 100% accuracy just to be accurate, as long as you can enjoy it.  Imo.

Now this guy defines anal.  Just reading about all the crazy stuff he went through for that perfect 16 bit image tires you out.

Have to admire the effort, though.

Effort, mental illness, whatever you want to call it.

Seriously though, why does aspect ratio even matter?  And what does "the way it's meant to be played" even mean?

You know what most people I knew played on?  A cheap TV, nowhere near calibrated, and showing reds as pinks or somethin

I knew a guy like this..  He bought a Sony monster sized Trinitron and placed it two inches in front of his bed, and then he spent months hunting down every type of Monster video cable, sparing no expense.  And in the end, he rarely watched shows..

I don't know, I get a lot of people are pretty obsessive compulsive, but I also know plenty of people who have more laid back personalities.  They just never, ever post online, and it kind of gives a skewed perspective of what's "normal"..  (A non gaming example:  Never use tap water in your sponge filter.  Yeah, fuck you, I think tap water will be fine for my four decent cigars and horded of bargain intro's.  But maybe if I had nothing but 40-100 buck a cigar packs I'd care..)
