Logan (2017)
« on: March 02, 2017, 01:02:27 PM »
Everyone's loving this in advance. Watching the trailers, I get the impression that there's a bunch of backstory I should be up to speed on before I sit down to watch this one. I've seen most, perhaps all of the X-Men/Wolverine films they've come out with, but I can't remember any important details. So, if anyone's got a few sentences explanation of how we got to bearded Logan driving around the desert with a half-dead Professor X in the backseat, feel free to hit me with it. Go ahead and spoil the previous movies for me, if necessary.

I can't spoil the movies because I haven't seen any recent X-Men movies since The Wolverine (and Deadpool if it counts). But the story is loosely based on the Old Man Logan storyline, where it's a future post apocalyptic Earth where all the superheroes are dead.  I haven't read the comic (it's a standalone story), but it had to do with Hulk essentially laying waste to everything. Obviously they can't do that in the movies since X-Men is Fox and Hulk is with Disney.

Damn it looked good but my brother in law just posted this

Logan is the best Xmen movie to date. Funny, dark, somber and action packed.

Great movie! VERY loosely based on Old Man Logan. Actually only thing from it is something is hinted at what happened at Westchester, but they never reveal it. Other than that its an original story.

I never saw The Wolverine so i can't comment on that but I think for the most part you can go in relatively clean.

Casting scored pretty nicely with Dafne Keen, the girl who played Laura. Basically playing her age (if not slightly older), she nails the resting bitch face perfectly.

The international red band trailer for this was incredible. Trailers can be deceptive, like we saw with Suicide Squad, but this movie was incredible. Saw it yesterday morning and I can't stop thinking about it. I can't stop feeling what I've been feeling.

This is the third time where I felt a comic book movie transcended the genre. First was The Dark Knight, then Winter Soldier, now this. This was just a great movie that happens to have comic book characters in it.

With Marvel Studios creating a larger universe, Fox's X-Men franchise was not aging well, til the loose reboots of First Class and Days of Future Past breathed new life into it. Of course Apocalypse made it take ten steps back, reminding everyone Bryan Singer does not belong here. Then Deadpool comes along with the R rating and surprises everyone. And that's all you needed to give Wolverine an R rating.

Deadpool was brilliant, but this uses the R rating to tell a much smaller, darker, and far more emotional story about a character we've known for almost two decades. Logan is broken down physically, the X-Men are gone, Xavier is a shell of his former self, and Logan just wants to be left alone to hide and retire somewhere. A little girl who bad guys are after comes into his life, and he's forced to get involved for one more ride.

Great movie. I heard the reviews were nothing but positive, but I did not expect this. The writing, directing, acting all delivered. There's no excuse for films like Batman vs Superman or Suicide Squad, Apocalypse. Those were awful and even worse now compared to this.

FWIW, the movie has nothing to do with the comic. The one similarity is Logan is older, not even old. That's it, if that even counts.

So sort of what they did with Superman v Batman and the DKR references.

Except good.

Now after seeing the movie, all you need to know is who Wolverine and Xavier are. If you know who those characters are, you're fine.

This movie was great and it exceeded my expectations just like Deadpool did. So many mark-out moments, and the R-rating really allowed them to take the action scenes to a whole new level in the Superhero genre. I am very impressed with what Fox has given us, and hope to see them continue this trend of R-rated superhero films. Deadpool will make a good trilogy, and perhaps Cable can even have a spin-off if he's done well, or some kind of X-force film with X-23 and Domino on the roster.

My god, that was awesome.

Much, much better then I expected.  Deadpool has been demoted to my second favorite X movie.

That Patrick Stewart "let me see it" moment needs to become a meme.

Saw this Friday night, and haven't stopped pondering it.  Must admit that I missed some fairly obvious insinuations in the film, and once I understood them I appreciated it even more.

I have one more comment, but it may veer into spoiler territory although not necessarily so.
As a father of a young son and especially daughter, the film really packed an emotional impact at the end. It would have anyway, but I know it affected me more because of my children.
that caption is suspicious because I've seen a different one, and you're more likely to get beaten for being a trump supporter than by one

Also, I guess everyone has seen this, but this spoiler heavy article touches on the end of Logan and a callback to The Wolverine.

I liked the movie.   I did find myself getting wrapped up in the story.   Tiny bit spoilerish but not really:

I wondered why the dude that was pinned by the truck kept his head, it was a HISHE moment.
