The hook looks to be a "dual gear" gimmick, where each has unique abilities and a cool down between them.

been years since i played  a mega man game. I can not remmber if i ever finished mega man 8 or not. i know i beat 1 thru 7  using roms and 2 thru 5 as a kid on the old nes.
