Actually, there are a ton of people in America whose causal hockey viewing expands past the Stanley Cup on Jan. 1st. So again, weazy has no clue what the fuck he's talking about.

It was the only game I was looking forward to yesterday, since I don't care a whole lot about the bowl games.  I don't watch hockey normally but the outdoor games are a lot of fun and have an amazing atmosphere.

Does anyone outside of the USA give a shit about bowl games?

The fact is the outdoor game does better ratings than any other game even up against bowl games. There are so many bowl games that have no meaning on Jan 1st that the NHL has managed to make an event in a sea of meaningless bowl games.

Also the base of the NHL fanbase in the US is not the base of college football fans. NHL has a stronghold in the Northeast and along the Canadian border out west. College football is big in the south but not as much in the Northeast. So they have different target markets.

To me the week after the Superbowl makes more sense for the outdoor game, you have the sports world focused on hockey at that time. There is no one else to compete with.

If by a ton you mean maybe 10% of the USA #1 American population then yeah you're right it's a ton.

Face it football, baseball, basketball, golf, and nascar crap all over hockey and I hate nascar.

But really aside from my trolling of you and Tom in response of your trolling of me, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to miss the point of my post.

It wasn't about hockey it was about the DATE the game is played.

Let's check the ratings when they come out. What do you think will have had the most viewers in the us? The bowl games or a hockey game?

Face it, you're a dick. And you're wrong. Yes, the other sports are popular, moreso than hockey, but that doesn't change the fact that the Winter Classic has more eyes on it than any other hockey event except maybe the Stanley Cup. And I'd venture to say that of all the games played on NYD, the only one that had more viewers than the Winter Classic was the Rose Bowl.

And you're an obese fucking slob on top of being a dick, so how's that working for you?

Also I'm not wrong. On january first the main thing people IN THE UNITED STATES are going care about is football. See that is my point. It's nothing against the winter classic or hockey which holy shit I'm a fan of, it's the date it's played.

On top of that too I thought they did a shitty job of advertising it this year in the first place

The only thing that was a blessing is the game having to get moved to a later time that day.

Why hasn't anyone just Googled the ratings yet?  Sorry, I'm sure I can find a cleaner couple of articles, but I'm being impatient right now.

College Bowls on New Years Day

http://thebiglead.com/index.php/2011/01/03/2011-new-years-day-bowl-ratings-down-but/

Winter Classic

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/hockey/nhl/01/03/winter.classic.tv.ratings.ap/index.html

Ratings up from last year for the Winter Classic fwiw.

Whatever, weazy, you're still a fucking dick for coming into a hockey forum for the sole purpose of asking why the fuck people care about hockey. Do you really add anything to the forums that tdub didn't? At least tdub TRIED to fucking make conversation every once in awhile. What do you do other than ape the ESPN "whoever's doing good right now is the best ever" party line, troll people, drop the fag bomb and whine about rep?

I haven't looked but if I had to guess, most of the bowls probably did better. That being said, I bet this year's Winter Classic was one of, if not the highest rated. They did a good job building interest around the two stars, as well as the HBO deal. It's helping to build a larger hockey audience and I all for that. It's one of the best sports out there and is probably number 6 ranked behind other sports in this country.

On a side note, I was laughing hysterically at Crosby cursing and crying up a storm when he didn't get a call. Also, Ovechkin sounds funny when he is on the ice because his accent is there while he's yelling. But definitely can see his intensity more than Crosby.

As a hockey fan I watch this game every year. Also as a fan Caps/Pens is appointment TV for me because the games are always good. With HBO running their special I got emotionally involved this year more than anything else and i was looking forward to this game more than any other. Not sure how that would affect a casual fan or a non-fan. But I think it couldn't hurt if they watched the build up. Getting emotionally involved always helps.

When I see the Ravens play on TV I watch for Michael Oher, that is because of the Blind Side. You just have an attachment to the person beyond football.

Now I would have liked to see what the numbers would have been at 1pm when the game was advertised for. 4 million for a hockey game is a good number for the NHL...4 million for a game that was moved 24 hours before the game started is even more impressive. Could they have got 6 at 1pm...not sure, but I do believe the number was hurt not helped by the move to 8pm Saturday night.

On a side note...tdub and PV are both gone thanks to me...Your welcome.
