NFL Week 17 thread
« on: January 02, 2011, 01:20:52 PM »
Not a whole lot of uncertainty surrounding this Week 17. This week is as much about incentives and which teams/players are mailing it in.

May the end of today bring us the absurdity of 7-9 Seattle hosting 12-4 New Orleans next weekend.

Joshua Cribbs need 1 reception today to earn 100k. He got it on the 2nd drive of the game against the Steelers.

The Patriots went 435 plays without a turnover. 7 complete games.

Josh Freeman and Dezmon Briscoe connect on a beautiful fade for a TD.

And Freeman to Mike Williams is even better!

It's unlikely the Bucs make the playoffs, but 10 wins is nice for them. That controversial loss to the Lions will sting.

Jets finish strong, I expect them to exit the playoffs promptly.

Jets are looking at an Indy, New England, Pit/Bal/KC gauntlet to make it to Dallas.

Meanwhile, the Raiders finish 6-0 against the AFC West. Unfortunately, they were 2-8 in their non-divisional games.

The Saints big win last week not as big as it could've been as Falcons win and they lose.  ESPN will use this as more evidence that the Falcons are frauds and the Saints are gods of course.

Charles Davis summed it up perfectly and echoed something I said weeks ago.  There isn't a "scary" team in the NFC.  You may think the Falcons are overrated, but they can beat anyone in this playoff field and no one is going to be scared of them either.  Everyone's pretty even and there really isn't a big bad great team, but the Falcons are tough in the Georgia Dome and they've put themselves in a place where you're going to have to go there to win.  Like I said when we had this debate before, "Why not the Falcons?"

I'm very happy for the Lions and their 6-10 record and I'm being completely serious.  That's a step in the right direction for a team that was historically bad.  Also they were a "tough out" and I think you have lots of reasons to be excited about them.

Lions need DB, LB and OL help next season. If they can get that they'll be tough to beat.

I am watching Bears/Packers.... Jay Cutler should sue the Bears O-Line for watching an assault and battery take place and doing nothing to stop it.

Jimmy Clausen attempted 299 passes and threw only 3 TD (9 INT). That's what a sub 60 QB Rating looks like.

Also, Ronnie Brown needed 30 yards for 750 on the season for a 500k incentive bonus. He carried the ball 6 times for 14 yards. Zero carries in the 2nd Half. Now it's possible they guaranteed him the bonus anyway, but if not...

Ricky Williams will reportedly retire and Robbie Brown very likely won't be resigned, so a whole new backfield for Miami. Hopefully, this includes QUARTERBACK!!! Pull a Ditka and sacrifice a whole draft to move up and get Luck, I don't care, just get a fucking QB.

Sadly, Henne > Sanchez is still a fact.

The Rams better win by 28 or less tonight. I want an entire division with negative point differential!

Rams -29
Seahawks -107 (LOL)
49ers -41
Cardinals -145 (2nd worst in the NFL to the Panthers -212)

Meanwhile, the 9-7 Chargers are +119, but failed to make the playoffs.  Only the Pats (+205), Packers (+148), Steelers (+143) and Falcons (+126) were more dominant. Only inept special teams (1/3 of the game, mind you) prevented the Chargers from being a Top 5 NFL team.

So the Seahawks could win, and not only make the playoffs and host a playoff game with a losing record, but they can do all that with a triple digit point differential..

That is so fucking awesome.

Yeah! A Seahawks win by 7 or less would be the best.

Seattle has lost 9 games by 15 points or more.  Safe to say no playoff team has ever accomplished that feat. Don't even have to look that one up. Carolina and Arizona have each lost 6 games by 15 or more this season. This is a really bad football team that is 60 minutes away from winning their division and hosting a home playoff game against an 11 win team.

The fact that the Cowboys' regulars were only one point better than the Eagles' backups makes me smile. Would have been a lot better to see us pull out the win (especially since there was BLATANT holding on the big Witten reception and it was bullshit that they let them call the timeout out of the delay of game), but hey, it was a meaningless game anyway.

Bring on the Pack (although they scared me the most out of our three potential playoff opponents)

Seattle takes a quick 7-0 lead on a perfect drive by Charlie "Beast" Whitehurst.

P.S. I just nicknamed him that because he actually sucks.

Jets @ Colts was the AFC Championship Game I went to last year.  Great game then, but I'm not expecting it to be as pretty this year.  I like the momentum the Colts have built up, especially on defense.  But they're going to need an even higher gear to go very far in the playoffs.

In a game that when it started, meant the division title, the Colts had to kick a last minute field goal against a Titans team which had Kerry Collins at QB, was on the road, with no reason whatsoever to play, and a probable lame duck coach.

The Jets can beat them.

Having said that, Peyton Manning scares the shit out of me.

Here's another good one:

If the Seahawks win this game, they win the NFC West and host a playoff game.

If the Seahawks lose, they get the #8 pick in the Draft.

Brutal drop goes right through the Rams WR's hands on their first attempt to move down the field all night.

If Bradford had receivers, the Rams would be up 3 TDs right now.
