Jim Thome

Currently has a 1.042 OPS in a shade under 300 plate appearances this season.

Let it be known he turned 40 less than 2 weeks ago. Off the top of my head, Bonds and Williams are guys who slugged over .600 after turning 40. Anybody else? Thome is entering some elite territory if he keeps this up for another 25 days.

Actually, not even Bonds did that (well, technically he did...in 42 at-bats his age 40 season).  That new Minny park is really tough on home runs too.  Nobody has ever slugged .600 in a qualified season.  Williams did it in around 300 at bats as well.  Dunno if anybody else ever did in a 300+ AB season, but seriously doubt it.  Great season for Thome.

Know who Thome's home run peak looks a lot like?  Hank Aaron.  If Thome had hit the majors at age 20 also, he would have easily hit 715 too.  Wonder if Aaron was on roids.  Also interesting about Aaron...his best slugging season (his clearly steroid aided age 37 season btw) is only the 57th best slugging season of all time.

Steroids or not, I wish the NL had a DH so we never had to get rid of him. Always loved Thome.

If there was a DH in the NL and no trial guarantee Bonds would still be playing.

Swear there was a story either before this or last season with Bonds giving Howard some pointers and the story being Bonds could still crush the ball.

We seeing as Bonds was putting up big #'s before he became a caveman I don't find that hard to believe.

I think a lot of it has to do with a more relaxed schedule. Thome's body has essentially been given the season off with partial DH duties and no time in the field. His season isn't all that shocking, the same thing happened with Frank Thomas in Oakland.
