Great Football Quotes
« on: September 13, 2010, 04:29:41 PM »
Post your favorites.  I'm starting with something other than a legendary Bear quote believe it or not.

“We didn’t play hard enough to get injured.”--GT's Paul Johnson on his injury report after losing to Kansas this week.

"Every time you throw a forward pass, there are 3 possible outcomes. And 2 of them are bad." -Bill Parcells.

You know, I'm not sure I know who originated that one or the variations on that one.  Bear Bryant said it and supposedly General Neyland said it before him.  No matter, it's a great quote.

Linked below is some discussion of it and on that page they list a whole bunch of other folks and not Bryant.  I have a book that specifically says Bryant said it though.

A couple of good ones from The Worst Coach in America, back when he was at Florida.

"But the real tragedy was that 15 hadn't been colored yet." -- Concerning a fire at Auburn's library that destroyed 20 books.

"You can't spell Citrus without U and T." -- Dissing Tennessee.

Related to that last one:

From Dick Butkus:

I wouldn't ever set out to hurt anyone deliberately unless it was, you know, important - like a league game or something.

This is easy.  All from Bum Phillips:

    * "There's two kinds of coaches, them that's fired and them that's gonna be fired."
    * "I always thought I could coach. I just thought people were poor judges of good coaches."
    * "I've never seen a hammer and tong game like that one."
    * "Mama always said that if it can't rain on you, you're indoors." (Explaining why he wouldn't wear his cowboy hat in a domed stadium)
    * "Dallas Cowboys may be America's team, but the Houston Oilers are Texas' team."
    * "I never scrimmage Oilers against Oilers...what for? Houston isn't on our schedule." (Source: The Book of Sports Lists)
    * (To an official) "Hey, can I, can I tell you one thing? That's three holding penalties on one football team in a quarter and a half. (Pauses) That ain't funny."
    * (To an official) "Now, you can't do that! If you do it, I'm telling you you'll have more hell over it than a little bit."
    * (referring to Alabama head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, with whom Phillip's worked as an assistant coach at Texas A&M) "He can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n."
    * (referring to Houston Oilers quarterback Warren Moon) "That boy could throw a football through a car wash and not get it wet."
    * (when asked about Earl Campbell's inability to finish a 1 mile run in training camp) "When it's first and a mile, I won't give it to him"

Those are great.  My uncle lives in Houston so I adopted them as my second team until they moved them to 10RC.

"The expectation level is high at the University of Alabama, and it should be. What's wrong with people expecting excellence?"--Coach Gene Stallings

I really appreciate this one now because a) he won a NC there and b) so many people tried to argue that even with the Saban hiring that BAMA could not be relevant again and were crazy for expecting to win at the highest level.  Three years after Coach Saban walked through the door they have another NC.
