Pirates of the Carribean 4(2011)

Captain Jack Sparrow is back and this time he is looking for the Fountain of Youth. He is racing against the Spanish and British to get to the Fountain. Jack ends up on a ship captianed by Black Beard played by Ian McShane with a salt and pepper beard(WTF??). Barbosa leads the British and has a beef with Black Beard.

This is trying to be like the first 3 but falls well short. It is missing comic relief, missing the love story and generally just misses.

It is just Jack with very little help from a very good cast. It is not the casts fault, there is just not a lot there. The supernatural aspects are scaled way back.

Mild recommendation.

it's as good as the last two (meaning it's merely OK).  if you're a fan of the series, you'll likely.  if you got bored after the 1st, then don't see this.

I saw it today and liked it miles more than 2 and 3... and felt it was on par with 1. Guess I'm just easily entertained.

I got bored DURING the first.  These Pirate movies are not for me.

I have never seen any of them. Always meant to, but pirates have never been my thing other than a few ARRR MATEY jokes

eh, my opinion above is slightly tainted by all the reviews i read which usually had a "im tired of these pirates" theme.  none of the reviews i read (including eberts) were based on anything.  they all seemed to just be over it which colored their opinions.  i mean, ebert was complaining that the sword fights had too much flipping and weren't as good as the ones in rob roy.  uh, yeah, rob roy is based in reality.  the pirates movies are not.

What I missed was the depth that many of the other characters brought in the first 3. Also Blackbeard was not a very good villian, you just never really hate him.

Maybe Pirates 5 will be better.

i agree that there was a lack of a true villain.  everyone was shades of grey.  even the spanish aren't really true villains, nor are they even fleshed out.  they were just an obstacle.

also, i have to nitpick that they don't even touch on where the f black beard was during the pirate war.

Saw it today, and I have to agree that it was a step down.  It was just blah.  Somehow I cared more about the mermaid and the preacher than any of the main characters.

i don't even know why they had the preacher character.  he was entirely unneeded.  at one point, i thought he was going to be the one black beard would have drink with him (not to spoil) so he could get his soul or something, but that wasn't the case.
