Week 4 College Football (9-25-2010)
« on: September 22, 2010, 03:12:31 PM »
A look at the SEC season getting cranked up by Ivan Maisel.

SEC teams gear up for conference play

FWIW I don't care about any other game besides BAMA/Arkansas.

Other than West Virginia (who isn't particularly great) the Big East is horrible this year.  The alleged second-best team in the conference got wiped out by Miami.  Cincinnati's been mediocre.  USF got run off the field in the second half against Florida.  Connecticut got blown out by Michigan and Temple.  Syracuse wasn't competitive against a Washington team that wasn't competitive against Nebraska.  Rutgers is the ugliest 2-0 team ever.  Hell, Louisville - shitty Louisville - has probably acquitted themselves better in their non-conference schedule than anyone by losing competitive games to Oregon State and Kentucky.

This is 2004 all over again, except there isn't the built-in lame duck excuse.

Looks like The Hen has a team that could do some serious damage this season. Impressive road victory against the reigning ACC Champs.

Arkansas looking good early.  Not going to panic though.  A lot of football left.

Eastern Michigan is so bad is funny. I have no idea what they are doing in division 1, much less playing Ohio State. 24-0 after 1 quarter, it might as well be 224-0.

10-7 Arky after the 1st QTR. BAMA moving the ball fairly effectively. D slowing Mallett down better.

Terrible decision by Greg McElroy after Mallett's terrible decision on the other end.  BAMA's D needs to bow up.  Offense moving the ball pretty well though.

Frustrating first half. Arkansas has most everything go their way, but BAMA still had an opportunity to take the lead from them.  GMc with two bad picks has really killed the offense.  I'd commit to the run and do a little play action.  Hopefully the D grows up a bit in the second half.

UCLA rolling Texas.

Can the Pac 10 get a little love here for what Oregon, Stanford, Arizona and UCLA have done this month?

Tide dominated the 4th Quarter (the 2nd Half, really).

Mallet threw the game away with a pair of unforced errors on the final 2 drives.

Saban shows some balls going for it to seal the game:)

Pac-10 deserves it, if the ACC and Big East deserve some crap for being so bad, the Pac-10 deserves some credit for being pretty darn strong.  Congrats to UCLA.

Man, that P.I. call in the 4th of BAMA/Arkansas was BS, but thankfully it didn't affect the outcome.  Gutsy move, but with a guy like Ingram, I'd do it too.

With an above average qb Arkansas would have had a chance.  To bad they had Mallet.  Congrats to Bama.  I'm still not certain they are the best team in the country, but they played hard, came back and deserved to win.

If NC State goes undefeated in that conference they'll be less deserving of playing for a national title than any undefeated team out of WAC or Mountain West.  If West Virgina wins tonight I actually expect them to go undefeated which is terrifying.

I said last week that I thought the Pac-10 was probably the best conference in the country and someone said that couldn't be true because Nevada crushed Cal.  Logical thinking as usual I see.

Um, Iowa killed Ball State.

Yeah, I know. But I need this moment.

No chance for the national title appearance any more but the rose bowl is still out there at the end.

Like I said on Twitter, "If you need a QB to throw for 300+ meaningless yards, Ryan Mallett's your guy."  Character win for the Tide.   Don't know if they're the best in the country either, but they didn't panic and beat a game Arkansas team that had just about everything go right for them until they Malletted themselves.

Alabama gazes into the abyss, tells it to take a rain check

Quote from: linked article
It took them about 30 minutes to get the 'Bama secondary nice and crispy with more than 300 total yards in the first half, and another 10 or so to put the Tide's 27-game regular-season winning streak up on the gallows, in front of the entire country, grimly staring down a 20-7 hole as the third quarter ticked to a close.

From there, it took the Tide about 15 minutes to slip from the noose, swing triumphantly over the heads of 70,000 stunned Arkansans and gallop away with their place as the top-ranked, championship-bound overlord as secure as ever. You know, all in a day's work.

Not sure what is more pathetic, WVU being the best team in the Big East, NC State being the best team in the ACC, or people pretending Oklahoma is a top ten football team.

After these past 2 games, Gene Chizik may not be allowed to enter the state of South Carolina.

They should make South Carolina State Champion shirts at AU, I'd LOL.

FATTY is a visionary, although in reality, the Pac-10 has been an elite conference for most of the decade.

Oklahoma hasn't played well at all, save the Florida State game, but I think we're going to find out FSU is a 7-5 team.

West Virginia is the best team in the Big East, but that's only because they're average and the rest of the conference is dreadful.

However, I like N.C. State.  Not as a top-10 team or anything, but Russel Wilson is a really good QB and they've stopped (for the most part) doing stupid shit to beat themselves.

Given that the Pac-10 at the very least is the second best conference in the country to the SEC (and that's a "very least" since I think top-to-bottom, it's better), if Oregon State can somehow win or at least finish conference play with two losses, maximum, will the pundits maybe give Boise State some fucking respect if it goes undefeated?

Boise State is ranked #3. Looks like they are getting plenty of respect to me.

It would appear that way, but let's see if they top out at #3 or if they get a shot at the BCS title, provided tOSU and Bama don't also win out.

Boise gets no respect from the pundits.  You even have sub-mongoloid fuckheads like Bill Plashke denouncing them while talking about the joys of the BCS because "every game is a playoff."  The fact that that would make college football the only sport in the world where an undefeated playoff team doesn't win the championship seems to escape professional whores like him.

Of course this doesn't matter since Boise isn't going to beat Nevada - who I think will go undefeated.
