Star Wars: The Old Republic
« on: December 17, 2011, 11:28:50 AM »
I got early access from pre-ordering, so I was able to get in a few hours with the game last night.  Never played any kind of MMORPG before, so I don't have a basis for comparison to WoW or anything like that.

I selected a Jedi Knight for my character (shocking, I know!), so my story started on the Jedi home planet of Tython.  My entire game time last night was spent in Padawan training missions around the planet.  Combat took a little getting used to from the single player games I've always played, but it wasn't so bad.  Seemed a little choppy at times even on what I think is a decent computer, so I'll have to look into the settings a bit to see if it's me or just the server I happened to be playing on.

So far, they're at least telling a little bit of a story as they send me off on these training missions.  I can't imagine the story could be as good as KOTOR since there are so many of us playing (can't have a million Darth Revan's running around), but I'm hoping there's at least enough there to keep it interesting.  I can also see how swapping characters and developing different ones could keep the game interesting as well.

One day down - rest of my life to start wasting!

I'm now on board with this too. This game has some of the best cinematics in history. Even though I absolutely HATE the overdone "slow motion impact/dodge" and that gets doubly overdone in these too. But a super fun experience.

I'm enjoying the hell out of this game.  My hat is off to Bioware on this one

I'm still enjoying it very much as well.  Worked my Jedi Guardian up to level 29 so far, and now I'm trying to decide if I just go on through the rest of his story or maybe dabble in a new class for a while.  I do plan on playing through with multiple characters, just a matter of when to start the new one.

This is what I mean by the slow motion tricks. It's not something Lucas would have done, so it seems out of place in a Star Wars environment.

Still an awesome cinematic though.

My Jedi Guardian is now just a battle or two away from level 40.  Been doing some PvP warzones with him, which was laughably bad at first as the other players were running circles around me.  Getting better at it with each round, but a lot of room to go.  Get decent experience out of running those, and access to good loot as you level up in Valor so I'd say it's worth it.

I also started a Smuggler and went with the Gunslinger advanced class, which gives him double pistols.  Got him up to level 19 now.

It's interesting the dynamic between the two.  The Guardian is basically a tank, but the Gunslinger is a ranged damage guy so the gameplay is a bit different.

Starting homeworlds were different, so the first 10 levels were no overlap at all.  Since both were Republic, the second step was Coruscant, but even the mission overlap is interesting because the Gunslinger has different dialogue options.  He pretty much flirts with any girl he runs into, lol.

I am way behind on everybody as my Smuggler is only Level 24. But I absolutely love the story.

so in the movies, jedi's are way more powerful than non-jedi's.  i'm guessing this isn't the case in the video game (otherwise, why would anyone be a smuggler).  what did they do to even things out?

They followed EU Canon.  In the movies you are just seeing the best of the best jedi most of the time. Think of them as god level characters.

In reality there are a lot of force users who can be taken down with ease by a normal trooper.  It all has to do with your strength within the force.  Gotta remember Jango Fett was the body guard of Count Dooku who isn't exactly a push over.  He's one of those god level Jedi.  However, Jango Fett is a jedi killer thus hired as bodyguard.

i don't know EU, but in clone wars, even the less known jedi and padawans could take on several less known / unkown troopers.

jango would be an elite non-jedi.  not just some body guard.  he did hang in there with obi-wan, but got his ass handed to him by a super elite guy.

anyway, i just meant game wise, what did they do to even the playing field.  did they reduce the power level of jedis?  did they force you to choose skills so a jedi isn't good at force abilities, light sabers (melee), blasters, star fighters, etc?  i mean, luke right out of the box could bullseye womp rats in his T-16 back home and they're not much bigger than 2 meters.

Ah they just made every bodies skills and abilities as balanced power wise as possible.  Just design each so one isn't all powerful and one isn't a joke

It's one of the things that bugs me about the EU. In the games and comics they have Jedi and Sith doing Force explosions and taking down whole battleships with just The Force. I don't think Lucas ever envisioned Jedi being uberhero powered. But while this game does do some of those superpowered Force attacks, you can pose a threat as a non-Jedi as well.

I agree with this.  I've gotten my Jedi Guardian up to the level 50 cap, and he's pretty badass.  However, I've also rolled a Smuggler and Trooper now and have started playing with both of those.  I've run into some very effective guys with my Jedi, and it looked like they'd be fun.

Also started up a Sith Sorceror just for the FORCE LIGHTNING!

EA Announces Free-to-Play option for Star Wars: The Old Republic
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/ea-expands-award-winning-mmo-190900648.html

Looks like free players will have limited access to some endgame content, but they can play completely through the story lines for all 8 character classes.

Yeah, you probably won't even get a stupid in game hat, like they gave to us who bought TF2 before it went free.

And we had a lot longer to enjoy it as an exclusive pay to play, too.

Sounds like the new "cartel coins" available in game will be the currency, and I did read that those who purchased the Collector's Edition will get an extra bonus pile of those once this starts, plus some pile for all of us who have been paying all this time.

I'm loving this game so far.

I don't see what the freeloaders are complaining about.

So you need to use Cartel coins to compete in pvp.  Boo f'n hoo.  The restrictions really only matter for end game content.   You're going to have to level your character before even thinking about pvp or high end group play.

And if you're not into pvp, you basically get Knights of the Old Republic 3, with eight Bioware written scenario's, for nothing.

Yeah, it started not too long ago.

Playing as an Imperial Agent of a race that looks like Thrawn's.  I understand you can do light side and dark side paths, each with different endings, and think I'm going to try and lean towards the light side.

Cool I'll have to get this re-installed.  I never finished leveling.  Realized I was paying a monthly fee for a single player game...

I liked it but not that much.
