Metahumans R2: The Thing vs. Hellboy
« on: October 02, 2010, 11:33:24 AM »

As a result of a mutagenic effect due to exposure to cosmic radiation, the Thing possesses high levels of superhuman strength, stamina, and resistance to physical injury. His strength has continued to increase over the years due to a combination of further mutation and special exercise equipment designed for him by Reed Richards.

He is capable of surviving impacts of great strength and force without sustaining injury, as his body is covered with an orange, flexible, rock-like hide. He is also able to withstand gunfire from high caliber weapons as well as armor piercing rounds. It is possible to breach his exterior however, and he does bleed as a result. The Thing's highly advanced musculature generates fewer fatigue toxins during physical activity, granting him superhuman levels of stamina.

Aside from his physical attributes, the Thing's senses can withstand greater levels of sensory stimulation than an ordinary human, with the exception of his sense of touch. His lungs possess greater efficiency and volume than those of an ordinary human. As a result, the Thing is capable of holding his breath for much greater periods of time.

Despite his brutish, even monstrous form, the Thing suffers no change in his personality nor his level of intelligence. Despite his greatly increased size, the Thing's agility and reflexes remain at the same level they had been prior to his transformation.

The Thing is an exceptionally skilled pilot, due to his time spent as a test pilot in the United States Air Force and as a member of the Fantastic Four. He is also a formidable and relentless hand to hand combatant. His fighting style incorporates elements of boxing, wrestling, judo, jujutsu, and street-fighting techniques, as well as hand to hand combat training from the military.

Among Hellboy's more obvious powers are superhuman strength and resilience in the face of physical injury. He can withstand powerful blows that would severely injure or kill a human. In "The Lost Army", he rapidly heals from being shot many times in the chest with an MG-42  machine gun before destroying the gun. He has also withstood being impaled through the chest with a sword, healing completely within a matter of minutes. Despite his ability to rapidly recover from seemingly mortal wounds, he is far from invulnerable, and can be injured by conventional weapons.

Hellboy also ages differently from humans. In the story Pancakes he is two years old but appears to be far older. In Nature of the Beast, set in 1954, the ten-year-old Hellboy appears fully grown. His rapid apparent maturation is in contrast to his actual rate of aging, which seems to be much slower than humans. Throughout the sixty-year span of the comics, he has not aged beyond the point at which he reached physical maturity.

In addition to his natural physical abilities, Hellboy carries a variety of items in his utility belt that can be used against various supernatural forces. He has been known to carry holy relics, horseshoes, various herbs, and grenades. Though he commonly carries an oversized revolver, Hellboy freely admits to being a lousy shot and often fights hand-to-hand.

Hellboy's right hand, referred to as the "Right Hand of Doom", consists of a large forearm and hand that seems to be made from red stone. The Hand is dexterous enough to catch a fly, but its large size causes Hellboy to prefer his normal-sized left hand to operate weapons and devices. The Hand is effectively invulnerable and feels no pain, serving much like a sledgehammer when used to punch an enemy.

I think I voted against both of these clowns in Round 1.  Voted Hellboy because he sucks less than the Thing.  Not even Det. Vic Mackey can save The Thing.

good match up even if you don't like either one.  i go with Thing.  he can shrug off bullets and is stronger than hellboy.

Agreed. I actually like this matchup. Not only do both guys have stone hands but the one-liners would fill a novel.

The Thing is completely lame.  He's one fourth of the dorkiest team of all time.  Hellboy should win just based on that.

Says the guy voting in a fantasy tournament pitting fictional characters against each other.

I know this is supposed to be some sort of "you're a dork calling people dorks" retaliation, but that matters not to me.  The FF is a lame team and he's the weakest link imho.
