Yup, which is kinda funny about the outcry of the hardware. "LOLZ PS4 USES DDR5 RAM - XBOX1 IS ONLY DDR3" type of stuff.

Microsoft will have 300,000+ servers servicing XBox One and it's XBoxLive. That's not a typo. A lot of the actual crunching will happen server side, so the console doesn't need to be super powerful. And, we now see the push starting to deliver games over the internet instead of buying a disc. We *might* get one more generation because technology changes so fast, but this one will last another decade.

Actually the PS4 is using GDDR5 RAM which means it's 8GB is about equal to the 8GB of DDR3 that the XBOX One is using if I'm remembering my conversions correctly.

The biggest thing that my co-worker and I find funny about this is Microsoft is saying "Hey we're switching to the model that PC has been using for the past 5+ years that EVERY PC USER is happy with and prefers over the console market." Yet people are flipping shit about it, including PC Users.

Oh btw, this is a fantastic video that fully explains why this move towards the PC style is good and that used games are fucking bullshit:

http://dailycaller.com/2013/06/07/new-xbox-by-nsa-partner-microsoft-will-watch-you-247/#ixzz2VYZSDzox

Possible privacy violations by Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox One have come under new scrutiny since it was revealed Thursday that the tech giant was a crucial partner in an expansive Internet surveillance program conducted by the National Security Agency and involving Silicon Valley’s biggest players.
One of the console’s key features is the full integration of the Kinect, a motion sensing camera that allows users to play games, scroll through menus, and generally operate the Xbox just using hand gestures. Microsoft has touted the camera as the hallmark of a new era of interactivity in gaming.
What Microsoft has not promoted, however, is the fact that you will not be able to power on the console without first enabling the Kinect, designed to detect both heartbeats and eye movement. and positioning yourself in front of it.

Disturbingly, a recently published Microsoft patent reveals the Kinect has the capability to determine exactly when users are viewing ads broadcast by the Xbox through its eye movement tracking. Consistent ad viewers would be granted rewards, according to the patent.
Perhaps the feature most worryisome to privacy advocates is the requirement that the Xbox connect to the Internet at least once every 24 hours. Many critics have asserted that Microsoft will follow the lead of other Silicon Valley companies and use their console to gather data about its users, particularly through the Kinect, and collect it through the online connection users can’t avoid.
Microsoft has promised that customers will be able to “pause” the camera’s function, but have put off questions on the precise specifics of their privacy policies.

Yea that's some bullshit.  Their announcements yesterday made it quite clear that the Kinect is NOT required for usage of the unit unless a game requires it.  That articles link to the unit unable to be powered on unless the Kinect is enabled links to an article that says nothing of the sort.

Maybe in the future, we'll manage cloud gaming..  Onlive proves we're not quite there yet.  And for some genre's, we may never be there as lag will always be present in such a model. (Specifically, for precision genres, like a beat based Guitar Hero or a fighting game, where every frame of data counts..)

Actually you can already cloud game through PC.  It hasn't become widely popular but it does exists.  We have some shitty machines here at work that can't even run the original Fallout correctly.  Thanks to the cloud gaming though we've been able to play L4D2 with each other on these machines as our internet connection is pretty good

I know it works, because I tried Onlive on my shitty laptop.  (Which is why I mentioned Onlive in my post.  :D )

It works fine for your average game, but other game types are nearly unplayable with cloud, because of latency issues.  Take Street Fighter, where some of the moves and techniques require inputs within a few frames (If we're talking 60 frames per second, and an input needs to happen within a fraction of that?  Lag can throw your game off.)
'
People pretty much accept if you're playing online, you'll have to deal with lag issues, so they either take it or leave it.  But if you replace consoles with cloud based services, you'd be killing a few genres, like the aforementioned fighters or games like Dance Dance Revolution or Guitar Hero.  The big fighting game tournament and other e-sport sub cultures would be up in arms, without hardware backed consoles which cloud currently can't compete with when it comes to input accuracy.

Well that is really all dependent on your connection speed.  If the connection is good enough you won't have said issues.

In before the obligatory "I can't afford internet so how am I supposed to play at all" or "I can't afford fast enough internet".

1) You're inability to afford internet is your problem and not the games or consoles makers.  If you are dropping money on a console and games but can't afford to pay for a monthly internet connection of some kind you need to get your priorities straight.

2) If you can't afford internet fast enough to support your habits maybe your priorities need to be re-evaluated (Such as job and how you live).  Granted it's more than likely because of the shit internet service we get in the US but again that isn't the fault or problem of the console maker or game maker.  They are looking at a world wide demographic not an individual country.

Not that I"m saying you would be saying that. Just putting it out there in counter point if anybody decides to bring it up as I have seen some people bring those two arguments up.

Internet speed doesn't exist yet that doesn't have latency issues.

Consider that "e-sport/pro" gamers often buy special, very expensive televisions, or stick with CRT's, in an effort to reduce lag from the console to the set.  I'm not really into e-sports (It's a kids game, really.), but the general consensus is if you're dropping more then 3 frames out of 60 frames on a set, that's unacceptable.

Most gamers at that level (The kind that go to tournaments) refuse to even play online, because of the additional lag.

No I get that but again that's just a small demographic and not the target audience.

And the amount of people like that are probably playing on PCs, and build their own machines to boot.

The hardware powergamer is an overhyped minority of the population. I know from experience.

I'm not sure where they got their information that Microsoft was apart of that as the only one I've heard for certain was Verizon and it's being assumed that other companies were apart of it.  I may have missed something though.

Absolutely.

The e-sport thing seems to be growing in popularity, though.  A Marvel vs Capcom 3 stream last week had around 2,000 people viewing, give or take.

And Evo alone is a pretty big deal, even if only a minority of the overall gaming population has any chance of participating at a high level..  They still don't want to lose that audience.  (May as well just not release fighters anymore, if that minority doesn't matter to the industry.)

Got it from here, wouldn't surprise me if MS denies it considering the implications.  Take off your fanboy googles, this information wasn't just invented out of thin air.

Google's already denied everything. Said no way no how.

And if this is true, then everything in this thread is patently false: http://www.a1-wrestling.com/forum/index.php?topic=7515.0

I will be utterly shocked if any of this PRISM stuff is actually true, regardless of company involvement.

Considering that's the EFF and they haven't spoken up on this subject yet retracting ratings I HIGHLY doubt that that is false so I'll believe Google that they had no part in it.

I truly hope this is much ado about nothing, but I'm really really really hesitant to believe anything these days.  I'm sticking with Sony regardless, but I've been a PS guy since day 1

So here's the real deal on the snooping/privacy stuff, at least the way I understand it.

Nothing has really changed from the current process. How it has worked is the gov't (or anyone) must present a formal request (warrant) to any of the providers/companies to get access to user data. This has not changed. No one has a secret back door into provider data that they can snoop on at will.

The government still must provide a warrant for data; what has changed is now most companies (Twitter is one that is not complying, nor do they have to) have now provided a secure "drop area" for the government to come and get their data after the company has processed the request.

So, rather than packing data up and mailing it (CD/DVD/disk drive) or emailing it, the companies have created secure "drop boxes" the government can access to pick up/download the data rather than go through the packaging method.

The pro is that requests are being processed more quickly. The con is that I suppose that these drop boxes could potentially be hackable, though I will assume the companies are taking huge security precautions and limiting this to certain IP's, etc.
